Norton Grange
Norton Grange is a country house near Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. History The house, which dates back to 1760 and was formerly known as Norton Lodge, was acquired by Rear Admiral Graham Hamond in the first half of the 19th century. It remained in the hands of the Græme-Hamond family until 1901 and then between the wars, as the Norton Chalet Hotel, it was owned by the Yelland family. During the Second World War, as HMS ''Manatee'', it was a combined operations shore establishment used for the training of officers and ratings in the use of landing craft. Admiral of the Fleet Sir Graham Eden Hamond, 2nd Baronet, (30 December 1779 – 20 December 1862) was a Royal Navy officer. After seeing action as a junior officer at the Glorious First of June and then at the Battle of Toulon, he commanded the fifth-rate HMS ''Blanche'' at the Battle of Copenhagen during the French Revolutionary Wars. Hamond became commanding officer of the third-rate HMS ''Plantagenet'' and captured the French ships ''Le Courier de Terre Neuve'' and ''L'Atalante'' in an action during the Napoleonic Wars. He took command of the fifth-rate HMS ''Lively'' and took part in the action of 5 October 1804, when three Spanish frigates laden with treasure were captured, and was then given command of the third-rate HMS ''Victorious'' and took part in the attack on Flushing during the disastrous Walcheren Campaign. Combined Operations Headquarters was a department of the British War Office set up during Second World War to harass the Germans on the European continent by means of raids carried out by use of combined naval and army forces. History The command used air and naval units to deliver the Commandos to various targets, and then recover them. Thus, it was a combined arms coordination and command structure. Admiral of the Fleet Roger Keyes was the first director, from 17 July 1940 to 27 October 1941. He was replaced first by Lord Louis Mountbatten, who led the command for a year. He in turn was succeeded by Major General Robert Laycock (October 1943 – 1947). It comprised background staff whose job was to plan operations and to develop ideas and equipment to harass the enemy in any way possible.
