The Northwest Miramichi River or Elmunokun is a river in New Brunswick, Canada. The Mi'kmaq referred to the river as Elmunokun, possibly meaning "a beaver hole" in reference to a deep pool in the river, just below the mouth of the Big Sevogle River, its second largest tributary, after the Little Southwest Miramichi.Geographical Names of Canada The Northwest Miramichi River has its origins near Big Bald Mountain in the Miramichi Highlands, part of the Appalachian Mountains in Northumberland County. Newcastle, New Brunswick
Newcastle is an urban neighbourhood in the city of Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada. Prior to municipal amalgamation in 1995, it was an incorporated town and the shire town of Northumberland County. Situated on the north bank of the Miramichi River, the former town is sometimes referred to as Miramichi West. Being a former shire town, Newcastle is the location of several government offices and the county court house. It was an important transportation centre as it was located at the head of navigation on the Miramichi River and had wharves for the export of lumber and other forest products. During the mid-1870s the Intercolonial Railway was built through the town, placing it on the mainline between Halifax and Montreal. Little Southwest Miramichi River
The Little Southwest Miramichi River is a river in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada. In Mi'kmaq it is referred to as "Tooadook". This river has its origins at Gover Lake in the Miramichi Highlands, part of the Appalachian Mountains. The river flows between the Northwest Miramichi River, to its north, and the Renous River to its south. It joins the Northwest Miramichi River at Red Bank, whereas the Renous River joins the Southwest Miramichi River at Renous. The Northwest Miramichi River then joins the Southwest Miramichi River at Newcastle to form the Miramichi River. The river is noted for Atlantic Salmon fishing. Red Bank, New Brunswick
Red Bank, New Brunswick is a small rural community (unincorporated area) in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada. It is located approximately 20 km west of Miramichi, New Brunswick, at the mouth of the Little Southwest Miramichi River, at its confluence with the Northwest Miramichi River. The community lies on the southwest bank of the NW Miramichi and opposite its sister community Sunny Corner around the intersection of Route 420 and Route 425. A post office has existed here since 1854. In 1871 Red Bank had a population of 175, and in 1898 Red Bank had a population of 200. The community now counts a population of 398 people as of 2020, and goes up and down depending on season (with a high population during Summer). New Brunswick Route 430
Route 430 is a mostly north–south secondary highway in the northwest portion of New Brunswick, Canada. The route's southern terminus starts at the eastern bank of the Miramichi River on the east side of the Miramichi Bridge on the intersection on Route 117 and Route 8 in the community of Newcastle. The road starts as Harvey Street and then Beaverbrook Blvd before separating from Route 8 when it continues north. The road continues north passing the northern terminus of Route 435 through Chaplin Island Road before turning east traveling through the settlement of Trout Brook before entering the community of Wayerton on the east bank of the Miramichi River passing McNeill Island. Atlantic Salmon
The Atlantic salmon (''Salmo salar'') is a species of ray-finned fish in the family Salmonidae. It is the third largest of the Salmonidae, behind Siberian taimen and Pacific Chinook salmon, growing up to a meter in length. Atlantic salmon are found in the northern Atlantic Ocean and in rivers that flow into it. Most populations are anadromous, hatching in streams and rivers but moving out to sea as they grow where they mature, after which the adults seasonally move upstream again to spawn. When the mature fish re-enter rivers to spawn, they change in colour and appearance. Some populations of this fish only migrate to large lakes, and are "landlocked", spending their entire lives in freshwater. Such populations are found throughout the range of the species. Miramichi River
The Miramichi River is a river located in the east-central part of New Brunswick, Canada. The river drains into Miramichi Bay in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The name may have been derived from the Montagnais words "Maissimeu Assi" (meaning Mi'kmaq Land), and it is today the namesake of the Miramichi Herald at the Canadian Heraldic Authority. The Southwest Miramichi River is a river in New Brunswick, Canada. The river has its origin in Carleton County, at Miramichi Lake in the Miramichi Highlands (a part of the Appalachian Mountains). Its two branches join near the hamlet of Juniper, Carleton County. Flowing initially southeast through heavy forests and large hills, the Southwest Miramichi River enters Northumberland County, is joined by the Taxis River at Boiestown then the larger volume flows northeast.
