Northern Yilgarn
Northern Yilgarn is an area at the juncture of the Shire of Yilgarn, Shire of Menzies and Shire of Coolgardie in Western Australia, north of Koolyanobbing. It is an area with rich mineral deposits, including uranium. It lies at the area located east of the eastern Wheatbelt region, and is a significant area for conservation reserves. Shire Of Yilgarn
The Shire of Yilgarn is a local government area in the eastern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia about east of Perth, the state capital. The Shire covers an area of and its seat of government is the town of Southern Cross. The main industries within the Shire are mining and farming. History The Yilgarn Road District was established on 24 December 1891. The town of Southern Cross separated as the Municipality of Southern Cross on 16 June 1892, but was re-absorbed into the road district on 8 February 1918. On 1 July 1961, it became a shire under the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. Wards The Shire of Yilgarn has no wards. The Shire of Menzies is a local government area in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia located to the north of Kalgoorlie. It covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Menzies. History The Shire of Menzies originated as the Menzies Road District, which was established on 31 May 1912 after the subdivision of the North Coolgardie Road District into three separate road districts (Menzies, Kookynie and Mt Malcolm). The North Coolgardie Road District had absorbed three municipalities on 1 March 1912, including the Municipality of Menzies covering the Menzies township, but had quickly proven too large and cumbersome to administer and was broken up. The Kookynie Road District merged into the Menzies Road District in mid-1918. Koolyanobbing, Western Australia
Koolyanobbing is located north-northeast of the town of Southern Cross, Western Australia. A subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs of Cleveland, Ohio mines Iron ore here. The ore is railed to the port at Esperance for export. Current operations commenced in 1993. The current owner and operator of the lease is Mineral Resources who took over from Cleveland-Cliffs in July 2018. MRL currently mine the ore and transport it to the port of Esperance History The first European to visit the area was Charles Cooke Hunt in 1864 who explored the Koolyanobbing range that is situated nearby. The next European to visit the area, in 1887 and later in 1891, was a gold prospector named Henry Dowd, who thought that the rocks in the area were of no value. He recorded his findings and stored them in a bottle that was buried next to a survey peg and which was found again in 1963 at what is now known as Dowd Hill. Wheatbelt (Western Australia)
The Wheatbelt is one of nine regions of Western Australia defined as administrative areas for the state's regional development, and a vernacular term for the area converted to agriculture during colonisation. It partially surrounds the Perth metropolitan area, extending north from Perth to the Mid West region, and east to the Goldfields–Esperance region. It is bordered to the south by the South West and Great Southern regions, and to the west by the Indian Ocean, the Perth metropolitan area, and the Peel region. Helena And Aurora Range
The Helena and Aurora Range or Bungalbin is a range of mountains and hills in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, north-east of Southern Cross and north-east of Koolyanobbing within the Shire of Yilgarn. The range is the largest of six banded ironstone ranges that are situated within the Coolgardie IBRA region. The range has a length of and the highest point has an elevation of . The traditional owners of the area are of the Kaprun peoples who speak the Kalaamaya language. The area is home to at least 16 Aboriginal sacred sites. The area is rich in minerals and was considered as a possible site for an Iron ore mine. In 2017, a proposal to develop the area by Mineral Resources was found to be unacceptable by the Environmental Protection Authority then appealed and rejected by an independent appeals convener. Mount Manning Nature Reserve
Mount Manning Range Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in the Goldfields-Esperance, Goldfields region of Western Australia north of Southern Cross, Western Australia, Southern Cross in the area known as the Northern Yilgarn, in the Coolgardie bioregion. It originally covered an area of , but, as of 2022, its size stands at . The Mount Manning Range is located inside the reserve. On 14 May 2007 EPA Bulletin 1256 proposed an A Class Nature Reserve to be established. It was announced in September 2010. The reserve is one of a number of reserves being incorporated into the Northern Yilgarn Conservation Reserves Management Plan. The other reserves are Mount Elvire Conservation Park, Die Hardy Range Nature Reserve, Diemals/Mount Jackson/Windaring, and Juardi Conservation Park.
