Northern Virginia Swim League
The Northern Virginia Swimming League, or NVSL, is a summer swimming and a separate dive league in Northern Virginia in the United States. The NVSL is the largest summer swim league in the United States with 102 teams and over 17,000 athletes. The stated goal of both NVSL and NVSL-Dive is "...to develop in the children participating in its program—a love for the sport, advanced aquatic skills, teamwork, and the principles of good sportsmanship." Diving is the sport of jumping or falling into water from a platform or springboard, usually while performing acrobatics. Diving is an internationally recognized sport that is part of the Olympic Games. In addition, unstructured and non-competitive diving is a recreational pastime. Melissa Belote
Melissa Louise Belote (born October 16, 1956), also known by her current married name Melissa Belote Ripley, is an American former competition swimmer, three-time Olympic champion, and former world record-holder in two events. She represented the United States at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. Career Belote was born in Washington, D.C. She grew up in Springfield, Virginia, was a member of the Springfield Swim and Racquet Club, and attended Robert E. Lee High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. At 15 years old, she won three gold medals at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. In the women's 100-meter backstroke, Belote defeated her American teammate and world-record holder Susie Atwood. In the women's 200-meter backstroke, Belote set a new world record of 2:19.19. Matt Scoggin
Mathew Aaron "Matt" Scoggin (born August 17, 1963, in Saitama, Saitama, Saitama, Japan) is a retired diving (sport), diver from the United States. He competed for ''Team USA'' at the 1992 Summer Olympics, finishing in tenth place in the Men's 10m Platform event. Scoggin won a silver medal in the same event at the 1987 Pan American Games. Since 1994, Scoggin has been the Diving Coach for his alma mater, the University of Texas. He is often called one of the greatest diving coaches in the country. Glenn Edward Moses Jr. (born June 7, 1980) is an American former competition swimming (sport), swimmer and breaststroke specialist who is an Olympic gold medalist, world champion, and former world record-holder. He represented the United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics, where he won a gold and silver medal. On January 23, 2002 in Stockholm, Sweden, Moses set a List of world records in swimming, world record in the short course 100-meter breaststroke (57.47). In January 2002, Moses also set the world mark in the short course 200-meter breaststroke, which he lowered again with a time of 2:02.92 in Berlin on January 17, 2004. Markus Rogan
Markus Antonius Rogan (born 4 May 1982 in Vienna) is a retired Austrian swimmer, who won two silver medals at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece and a gold medal for 200 m backstroke at the 2008 World Short Course Championships in Manchester. He also was the world record holder in 200 metres backstroke (short course) in that year. Rogan's first big international success was a second-place finish in the 200 m backstroke at the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. In the Olympics in 2004, Rogan placed second in both men's 100 m backstroke and the men's 200 m backstroke, both times behind Aaron Peirsol of the United States. The 200 metre race was controversial as Peirsol was first disqualified but later reinstated as gold medalist. Kate Ziegler
Kate Marie Ziegler (born June 27, 1988) is an American competition swimmer who specializes in freestyle and long-distance events. Ziegler has won a total of fifteen medals in major international competition, including eight golds, five silvers, and two bronzes spanning the World Aquatics and the Pan Pacific Championships. She was a member of the 2012 United States Olympic team, and competed in the 800-meter freestyle event at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Early years Ziegler was born in 1988 in Fairfax, Virginia, the daughter of Don and Cathy Ziegler. She was a part of a local swim team, FISH, where she was coached under Ray Benecki. Andrew Seliskar
Andrew Hammond Seliskar (born September 26, 1996) is a retired American competitive swimmer. He won the gold medal in the 200 meter butterfly at the 2013 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai, breaking the Championships record. Seliskar swam in college for the California Golden Bears at the University of California, Berkeley and currently swims for California Aquatics. Previously, he attended Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia and swam for Nation’s Capital Swim Club. In 2015 he was named male High School Swimmer of the Year. Swimming in the United States began competitively in the 1880s. The first nationally recognized swimming organization was the Amateur Athletic Union in 1888. History In the 1920s and 1930s, public swimming pools became more accessible to the general public. USA Swimming The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) was the official organization responsible for the running of all amateur sports in the United States, established in 1888. The AAU was officially charged with the organization and operation of many sports in the US. During this time, swimming was one of the committees in the organization and was not an independent governing body. The Amateur Sports Act of 1978 enabled the governance of sports in the US by organizations other than the AAU. This act made each sport set up its own National governing body (NGB).
