The Northern Rubber Company was a manufacturer of Indian rubber products founded in Retford, Nottinghamshire in 1871. Its assets were sold and acquired multiple times, but there is a direct link from The Northern Rubber Company to aerospace components manufacturer Icon Aerospace Technology, which was acquired by US firm IPS in 2020 and which still manufactures engineering components on the Thrumpton Lane site in Retford. History Founding The Northern Rubber Company was founded by merchant-turned industrialist Alfred Pegler in Retford, Nottinghamshire in 1871 when Pegler purchased the Victoria Works, Thrumpton Lane, Retford. Retford
Retford (), also known as East Retford, is a market town in the Bassetlaw District in Nottinghamshire, England, and one of the oldest English market towns having been granted its first charter in 1105. It lies on the River Idle and the Chesterfield Canal passes through its centre. Retford is east of Sheffield, west of Lincoln, Lincolnshire, Lincoln and north-east of Nottingham. The population at the 2011 census was 22,013. In 1878 an Act of Parliament extended the borough of East Retford to include the village of Ordsall, Nottinghamshire, Ordsall, West Retford and part of the parish of Clarborough. It is administered by Bassetlaw District Council, which itself is now a non-constituent partner member of the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority. Nottinghamshire
Nottinghamshire (; abbreviated Notts.) is a landlocked county in the East Midlands region of England, bordering South Yorkshire to the north-west, Lincolnshire to the east, Leicestershire to the south, and Derbyshire to the west. Alfred Pegler
Alfred Pegler (1820-1900) was a merchant and industrialist who founded the Northern Rubber Company and through his sons Pegler Brothers and Co. Personal life Alfred Pegler was born in 1820 in Camden, London, the son of Moses and Susanna Octavia Pegler (b. 1789). In 1847 he married Elizabeth Selina Partridge (b. 1826-1904)) in Lambeth, London and they had a daughter Josephine (b. 1850) and sons Stephen Francis (b. 1852-1937) and Francis Egerton (1856-1938). Alfred died in 1900 in Retford at the age of 80. His great grandson (the son of Francis Egerton Pegler and grandson of Frank Pegler) was Alan Pegler. Pegler lived at Grade II* Amcott House, Grove Street, Retford (now the site of Bassetlaw Museum) until his death in 1900, after which his widow remained there until she died in 1904. Stephen Pegler
Stephen Pegler (1852–1937) was the son of the founder of the Northern Rubber Company, Alfred Pegler. He was an industrialist and pioneer in the rubber industry, as well as a photographer. His early colour photographs (autochromes) are now kept in the Bassetlaw Museum in Retford, Nottinghamshire and are said to be the largest collection of Autochromes in the UK by one photographer. Personal life Stephen Francis Pegler (1852-1937) was born in Bowdon, Cheshire, the son of Alfred Pegler, the founder of the Northern Rubber Company, and his wife Elizabeth Selina Pegler (nee Partridge). He had an older sister Josephine, and a younger brother Francis (Frank). Alan Pegler
Alan Francis Pegler OBE, FRSA (16 April 1920 – 18 March 2012) was a British businessman, entrepreneur, and railway preservationist. Early life Born in London on 16 April 1920, he was the great grandson of Alfred Pegler, founder of the Northern Rubber Company based in Retford, and son of Francis Egerton Pegler. His mother Enid was the daughter of amateur golfer Frederick Schomberg Ireland, who was written about by Bernard Darwin in his book ''Green Memories''. Raised in the Nottinghamshire village of Sutton cum Lound, he was educated at Hydneye House School, Sussex, and Radley College near Oxford. His uncle was Stephen Pegler. Career Pegler gained his Private Pilot Licence aged 17 at Radley, and spent much of his time chasing LNER expresses along the East Coast Main Line.
