Ascot Racecourse (Western Australia)
Ascot Racecourse is the major racecourse in Perth, Western Australia, situated approximately east of the Perth central business district, with the headquarters of the Perth Racing positioned directly opposite. It is regarded as the "grand old lady" of Australian racecourses. It has a track with modern, well drained turf, and a track inclining straight regarded by experts as the most severe test of stayers in Australia. History In 1848 a race meeting was held on Hardey's "Grove Farm" alongside the Swan River. Soon afterwards a site was selected for a permanent course on Hardey's propertythis became the Perth Race Course (later Ascot Racecourse). In 1852, the West Australian Turf Club was formed. The inaugural Perth Cup was held in 1887. In 1885 a railway was constructed to the northern side of Swan River opposite the racecourse. Australian Cup
The Australian Cup is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older, held under Weight for Age conditions, over a distance of 2000 metres, at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in March during the VRC Autumn Racing Carnival. Total prize money for the race is A$1,500,000. History The race was once Australia's premier long distance race, raced at a distance of 18 furlongs (3621m) - thus, longer than the Melbourne Cup. In 1943 the race was shortened to 17 furlongs 110 yards to allow the race to be started from the top of Flemington's famous Straight Six, to have bigger fields. The VRC in the early 1960s shortened the distance to miles to attract classier middle distance gallopers. Black Heart Bart (foaled 11 September 2010) is a retired six-time Group 1 winning Australian bred thoroughbred racehorse. Background Black Heart Bart was purchased by senior part owner Kim Renner for $20,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale. Racing career 2013/14: three-year-old season Unraced as a two-year-old, Black Heart Bart made his race debut on the 7 December 2013, finishing unplaced at Western Australia's Ascot Racecourse. Caulfield Cup
The Caulfield Cup is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held under handicap conditions, although the Melbourne Racing Club is in the process of turning the race into weight for age (WFA) conditions. This is for all horses aged three years old and older. It takes place over a distance of 2400 metres at the Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in mid October. The prize money is A$5,000,000. The W. S. Cox Plate is a Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three years old and over under Weight for age conditions, over a distance of 2040 metres (approximately 1m 2f), that is held by the Moonee Valley Racing Club at Moonee Valley Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in late October. Northerly (17 October 1996 – 9 May 2012) was an Australian racehorse who is considered arguably Australia's best middle distance Thoroughbred horse of the early 2000s. Northerly, trained by Western Australian harness racing legend Fred Kersley, won nine Group One (G1) races, including the Australian Cup twice, and the Cox Plate, regarded as the Weight for Age championship of Australasia, also on two occasions. The horse, a bay gelding, was bred by Oakland Park Stud in Western Australia and was sired by Serheed (USA) from North Bell by Bellewater (FR). Serheed, a half-brother to both Ajdal and Formidable, was the sire of 27 stakeswinners that had 84 stakeswins, mostly in Western Australia with Northerly being his best performer.
