North Roby, Texas
North Roby, also known as Fisher, is a ghost town in north central Fisher County, Texas, United States, four and one half miles north of Roby. Its altitude is 1,932 feet (589 m). The town was founded in 1885 by E.D. Strang, who suggested that it become the county seat for Fisher County. It had a population of 200 by 1890 and had three stores, a hotel, and a blacksmithy. Fisher County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 3,672. The county seat is Roby. The county was created in 1876 and later organized in 1886. It is named for Samuel Rhoads Fisher, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and a Secretary of the Navy of the Republic of Texas. Roby is a city in and the county seat of Fisher County, Texas, United States. The population was 643 at the 2010 census. History In 1885, shortly after Fisher County was organized, a dispute arose between business partners from Mississippi and a town called Fisher. Both wanted their land to host the courthouse. The partners were M.L. and D.C. Roby, and the town of Fisher is now called North Roby. In 1886, construction was begun on the new courthouse and a school and post office opened. The community had 13 houses by that summer. In 1890, the population was estimated to be 300 people and the town had a hotel, two general stores, Baptist and Methodist churches, a restaurant, and a weekly newspaper, the ''Fisher County Call''. Roby had no jail until 1892, when one was constructed out of stone. A new jail was built in 1926 out of brick, and remained in use until 2016. Roby And Northern Railroad
The Roby and Northern Railroad was constructed in 1915 to connect the agricultural community of Roby, Texas with a connection to the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway at North Roby, then known as Old Fisher, both located in Fisher County, Texas, a few miles north of Sweetwater. There was a need to move agricultural products (such as cotton) passengers, and livestock the north to the Waco-Rotan branch of the MKT. The original railroad was equipped with steam locomotives, but in 1922 the owners made the decision to abandon the line. The concerned citizens of Roby were able to raise $10,000.00 to assist the local utility company, West Texas Utilities Company, to convert the railroad to electrical power. This was accomplished in 1923, and rail service was to be continued. The operating corporation was headquartered in Roby.
