Western Australian Legislative Council
The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The 2005 changes continued to maintain the previous malapportionment in favour of rural regions. Legislation was passed in 2021 to abolish these regions and increase the size of the council to 37 seats, all of which will be elected by the state-at-large. Cyril Cornish
Cyril Richard Cornish, DSO (30 June 1891 – 10 October 1961) was an Australian businessman and politician who was an independent member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1942 to 1946, representing North Province. Cornish was born in Arakoon, New South Wales, but moved to Western Australia as a child. After leaving school, he worked for periods with a merchant firm in Katanning, as a miner on the Eastern Goldfields, and as an engine driver for Western Australian Government Railways. Cornish enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in December 1915, and during the war served in France with the 44th Battalion. Tom Helm (politician)
Thomas Richard Helm (born 5 April 1941) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Bootle in England and arrived in Australia in 1980. He was a rigger before entering politics. In 1986 he was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council as a Labor member for North Province, moving to Mining and Pastoral from 1989. Tom Stephens
Thomas Gregory Stephens (born 15 November 1951 in Sydney, New South Wales Australia) is a former Australian parliamentarian. Early life and career Youngest son to John Joseph and Ellen Genevieve Stephens six children; five sons and one daughter. The family were living at the time on the Hawkesbury River at Brooklyn, New South Wales. Tom was educated by the Sisters of Mercy at their convent school in Parkes, NSW; then at Campbelltown NSW by the Good Samaritan Sisters before his secondary schooling at St Gregory's Marist Brothers Agricultural College in Campbelltown. Peter Dowding
Peter McCallum Dowding SC (born 6 October 1943) is an Australian lawyer and former politician who served as the 24th Premier of Western Australia, from 25 February 1988 until his forced resignation on 12 February 1990. He was a member of parliament from 1980 to 1990. Dowding graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Laws, and he subsequently worked as a solicitor and barrister. In 1980, he was elected to the North Province of the Western Australian Legislative Council, representing the Labor Party. He entered cabinet when Labor won the 1983 state election, and changed ministries several times over the ensuing years due to cabinet reshuffles. John Tozer
John Carmichael Tozer (23 June 1922 – 23 April 1990) was an Australian public servant and politician who served as a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1974 to 1980, representing North Province. Tozer was born in Perth to Evaline (née Carmichael) and Hubert John Harris Tozer. He attended Hale School and Perth Technical College, and in 1940 was accepted as an engineering cadet with Western Australian Government Railways. He enlisted in the Australian Army later in the year, however, and during the war served for periods with the Royal Australian Engineers, the 2/6th Commando Squadron, and the Parachute Training Centre. Bill Withers (politician)
William Robert Withers (born 8 August 1931) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to butcher Robert Stephen Withers and Elsie Mary McPharland. He attended Kogarah Primary School and then Sydney Technical High School, graduating in 1947. He worked as a fishing and tourist guide before joining the Royal Australian Air Force in 1948, serving until 1957. On 3 July 1954, he married Judith Mary Wakefield in Werribee; they had three children. From 1956 until 1964 he was a senior cloud seeding officer in a joint RAAF- CSIRO operation. John Leslie Hunt (22 November 1912 – 16 July 1988) was an Australian politician who served as a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1971 to 1974, representing North Province. Hunt was born in Kalgoorlie to Ruby Maud (née Seddon) and Edwin Charles Hunt. He attended Eastern Goldfields High School and then farmed in Moorine Rock for several years. He later worked as a miner in Kalgoorlie and Marvel Loch. Hunt enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in 1942, and during the war serving in New Guinea and Borneo with the 2/6th Commando Squadron. He was discharged in 1946, and in 1953 moved to the Pilbara, initially working at Wittenoom for ABA. He was later employed by the Mines Department, as a workmen's inspector based out of Port Hedland. Frank Wise
Frank Joseph Scott Wise AO (30 May 1897 – 29 June 1986) was a Labor Party politician who was the 16th Premier of Western Australia. He took office on 31 July 1945 in the closing stages of the Second World War, following the resignation of his predecessor due to ill health. He lost the following election two years later to the Liberal Party after Labor had held office for fourteen years previously. Wise was a farmer for several years in Queensland before working in the Department of Agriculture in that state. He later moved to Western Australia as a technical adviser in the Western Australian Department of Agriculture and in 1928 was commissioned to report and advise on tropical agriculture in the Northern Territory and the North West of Western Australia. William Willesee
William Francis Willesee (26 December 1911 – 18 August 2000) was an Australian politician who served as a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1954 to 1974. He was a minister in the government of John Tonkin. Early life Willesee was born in Adelaide, South Australia, to Ethel May (née Flinders) and William Robert Willesee. His father ran for parliament unsuccessfully on three occasions in the 1920s, while his younger brother, Don Willesee, was a senator. Moving to Western Australia as a small child, Willesee attended various schools in the country, and later studied accounting at Perth Technical College. He was employed as a clerk by the Carnarvon Municipality from 1936 to 1942, and then joined the Volunteer Defence Corps, working as a pay clerk. Don Barker (politician)
Charles William Donald Barker (14 August 1904 – 18 July 1956) was an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1952 until his death, representing North Province. Barker was born in York, England, and came to Western Australia at the age of 17, working as a station hand in the North-West. He served with the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. On his return to Australia, he ran a café in Broome for a period, and then worked in Derby as a stock inspector. Barker entered parliament at the 1952 Legislative Council elections, defeating the sitting Liberal member, Mervyn Forrest, by just five votes. He died in office in July 1956, aged 51. The Australian Labor Party (Western Australian Branch), commonly known as WA Labor, is the Western Australian branch of the Australian Labor Party. It is the current governing party of Western Australia since winning the 2017 election under Mark McGowan.
