Cyril Cornish
Cyril Richard Cornish, DSO (30 June 1891 – 10 October 1961) was an Australian businessman and politician who was an independent member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1942 to 1946, representing North Province. Cornish was born in Arakoon, New South Wales, but moved to Western Australia as a child. After leaving school, he worked for periods with a merchant firm in Katanning, as a miner on the Eastern Goldfields, and as an engine driver for Western Australian Government Railways. Cornish enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in December 1915, and during the war served in France with the 44th Battalion. The Distinguished Service Order (DSO) is a military decoration of the United Kingdom, as well as formerly of other parts of the Commonwealth, awarded for meritorious or distinguished service by officers of the armed forces during wartime, typically in actual combat. Since 1993 it has been awarded specifically for 'highly successful command and leadership during active operations', with all ranks being eligible. Katanning, Western Australia
Katanning is a town located south-east of Perth, Western Australia on the Great Southern Highway. At the 2016 Australian census, 2016 census, Katanning had a population of 3,687. History The name ''Katanning'' is derived from the native name for a camping place. That native name for the camp was 'Kartannup' - 'Kart' meaning head and 'annup' meaning meeting or camping place. In the very early days before town settlement, a big tribe of natives lived in the area. When the tribe of another district would visit annually, Kartannup was the head camp or meeting place. In the 21st century, in one of the many possible examples of the attempted re-writing of history, some have tried to suggest that ''Kartanup'', means "clear pool of sweet water", or that ''Katanning'', means "spiders on your back". Dick Old
Richard Charles Old (3 December 1922 – 29 June 2007) was an Australian politician who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1974 to 1986. He was state leader of the National Country Party (NCP) from 1975 to 1985, and served as a minister in the governments of Charles Court and Ray O'Connor. Early life Old was born in Katanning, Western Australia, to Vera Anne (née Cornish) and James William Old. His uncle, Cyril Cornish, was also a member of parliament. After leaving school, Old began working for Goldsbrough Mort & Co., an agricultural retailer. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1941, and during the war served on airbases in North-West Australia (including Corunna Downs Airfield) as a wireless operator. After being discharged in 1945, Old returned to Goldsbrough Mort as a manager, working for periods in Perth, Midland, Corrigin, and Moora. Municipality Of Carnarvon
The Town of Carnarvon was a local government area in Western Australia. It was established as the Municipality of Carnarvon on 4 June 1891. The council chambers were located in the existing Jubilee Hall building in Francis Street, Carnarvon throughout its history. Many council records were lost in 1960 when Jubilee Hall was badly damaged by a cyclone. In 1919, the council purchased the assets of the Carnarvon Electric Light and Power Company and took over the supply of electricity and lighting to the municipality, funded by a loan and an increase to the general rate. It gained town status as the Town of Carnarvon on 1 July 1961. It ceased to exist on 12 February 1965 when it amalgamated with the surrounding Shire of Gascoyne-Minilya to form the Shire of Carnarvon. Carnarvon is a coastal town situated approximately north of Perth, in Western Australia. It lies at the mouth of the Gascoyne River on the Indian Ocean. The popular Shark Bay world heritage area lies to the south of the town and the Ningaloo Reef and the popular tourist town of Exmouth lie to the north.
