North Pontianak (''Indonesian: Pontianak Utara'') is a district (''Indonesian'':''kecamatan'') of the city of Pontianak. It lies on the north bank of the Kapuas Besar River (west of the confluence to between the Kapuas Kecil River and the Landak River, which join to form the Kapuas Besar River) and covers an area of 37.22 km2. Pontianak or Khuntien is the capital of the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan, founded first as a trading port on the island of Borneo, occupying an area of 118.31 km2 in the river delta, delta of the Kapuas River at a point where it is joined by its major tributary, the Landak River. Kapuas River
The Kapuas River (or Kapoeas River) is a river in the Indonesian part of Borneo island, at the geographic center of Maritime Southeast Asia. The Equator Monument
The Equator Monument ( id, Tugu Khatulistiwa) is located on the equator in Pontianak, Indonesia. It marks the division between the northern and southern hemispheres. History *First monument built in 1928 by a Dutch geographer. *1930 completed, in form of bollard radially and dart. *1938 rebuilt with completion by architect Friedrich Silaban. The original monument is still visible in the interior. *1990 renovated with the addition of a dome to protect the original monument and also making of duplicate of monument of the size five times bigger than its original size. * Its grand opening on September 21, 1991. Pontianak Sultanate
The Pontianak Sultanate (Malay: كسلطانن ڤونتيناك, ''Kesultanan Pontianak'') was an Islamic Malay state that existed on the western coast of the island of Borneo from the late 18th century until its disestablishment in 1950. The Sultanate was located at the mouth of the Kapuas river in what is today the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan, and the Sultan's residential palace was situated in what later grew to become the modern-day Indonesian city of Pontianak. History The Pontianak Sultanate was founded in 1771 by explorers from Hadhramaut led by al-Sayyid Syarif Abdurrahman al-Kadrie, descendant of Imam Ali al-Uraidhi ibn Ja'far al-Sadiq. He had two political marriages in Kalimantan, first with the daughter of Panembahan Mempawah and then with the daughter of the Sultan of Banjar.
