North Lanes, Staffordshire
North Lanes (Lime Lane) is an area of Norton Canes, in the Cannock Chase District of Staffordshire. The area is rural, and forms a large part of Norton Canes's greenbelt. It is the location of the former colliery from where a canal basin of the Cannock Extension Canal is located, and sits above multiple mineshafts. The name is historically Lime Lane but appears as North Lanes on modern maps. The area is mostly made up of winding roads, farmland and common land. The Cannock Extension Canal here is a Cannock Extension Canal due to the presence of Floating Water Plantain. Norton Canes
Norton Canes is an industrial village, civil parish and ward of Cannock Chase District, in Staffordshire, England. It is situated out of the centre of Cannock. At the 2001 census it had a population of 6,394, and an area of of which 86% is green open space. The population had increased to 7,470 at the 2011 Census. Areas of the village include Little Norton, Little Wyrley, and North Lanes (Lime Lane). The Cannock Chase Coalfield once had 45 collieries within of Norton Canes, employing over 5,800 men, as well as 2 large surface mines; the last pit in the area closed in 1993. Grove Pit was one of these pits, and on 1 October 1930 was the scene of a major tragedy when 14 miners were killed in an explosion there. Another local colliery was owned by the Jerome family, hence Jerome Road now on the site of the pit. This was the family of the author Jerome K. Jerome. Cannock Chase District
Cannock Chase is a local government district in Staffordshire, England. Its council is based in the town of Cannock; other notable towns are Rugeley, Bridgtown and Hednesford. The district covers a large part of the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, from which it takes its name. The district was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of Cannock and Rugeley urban districts, along with Brindley Heath from Lichfield Rural District, and Norton Canes from Aldridge-Brownhills Urban District. Cannock, which covers around 30% of the population, includes the parish of Bridgtown but the rest of Cannock is unparished. Until the 2010 general election the parliamentary constituency of Cannock Chase consisted of Cannock Chase district plus the adjacent village of Huntington. Grove Colliery
Grove Colliery was a colliery in North Lanes, Staffordshire. Located between the villages of Pelsall and Norton Canes. It opened in 1852 as Wyrley Grove Colliery. Cannock Extension Canal
The current Cannock Extension Canal is a canal in England. It runs from Pelsall Junction on the Wyrley and Essington Canal, north to Norton Canes Docks and forms part of the Birmingham Canal Navigations. Historically, it ran to Hednesford, and served a number of collieries, which provided the main traffic. It opened in 1863, and the northern section closed in 1963, as a result of mining subsidence. History Following a period of negotiations, the Birmingham Canal Navigations had been leased by the London and Birmingham Railway from November 1845. The lease meant that the railway company had to authorise all new works where the cost exceeded £500. An Act of Parliament was obtained in 1846 to legalise the agreement, by which time the London and Birmingham Railway had become part of the London and North Western Railway. Little Wyrley
Little Wyrley is an English hamlet in the county of Staffordshire, that forms part of Norton Canes civil parish and the Cannock Chase district. In 1870-72 it had a population of 61 as recorded in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales. It borders the village of Landywood to the west (the Southern area of the larger village of Great Wyrley), Norton Canes to the north, and the Walsall district of Pelsall to the east, of which it shares the postcode district of WS3. Little Wyrley Hall is currently owned by the Wallace family, who also own much of the land in Little Wyrley. Apart from the Hall, there is also a Tythe Barn and a number of apartments. Brownhills West is a suburban village of Brownhills in the Walsall Metropolitan Borough and forms part of the border of the West Midlands and Staffordshire.
