North Fork Crooked River
The North Fork Crooked River is a tributary, long, of the Crooked River in the U.S. state of Oregon. Beginning in the Ochoco National Forest and the Ochoco Mountains east of Prineville, it flows north, then east, then south-southwest to meet the larger stream between Post and Paulina. The confluence is upstream of where the Crooked River flows into the Deschutes River. In 1988, Congress added a large fraction of the river to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. About were designated "wild", about "scenic", and about "recreational". About of the upper river flowing through Big Summit Prairie was excluded from the Wild Rivers designation. Ochoco National Forest
The Ochoco National Forest is located in the Ochoco Mountains in Central Oregon in the United States, north and east of the city of Prineville, location of the national forest headquarters. It encompasses of rimrock, canyons, geologic oddities, dense pine forests, and high desert terrain, as well as the headwaters of the North Fork Crooked River. A 1993 Forest Service study estimated that the extent of old growth in the forest was . In descending order of forestland area, it occupies lands within Crook, Harney, Wheeler, and Grant counties. Ochoco Mountains
The Ochoco Mountains are a mountain range in central Oregon in the United States, located at the western end of the Blue Mountains. They were formed when Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic rocks were slowly uplifted by volcanic eruptions to form the Clarno Formation. Today, the highest point in the range is Lookout Mountain. The dominant vegetation on the west side of the range is old-growth ponderosa pine; on the east side, western juniper is common. The western area of the mountains is administered by the Ochoco National Forest, while the southeastern section is part of the Malheur National Forest. The Crooked River is a tributary, long, of the Deschutes River in the U.S. state of Oregon. The river begins at the confluence of the South Fork Crooked River and Beaver Creek. Prineville, Oregon
Prineville is a city in and the seat of Crook County, Oregon, United States. It was named for the first merchant located in the present location, Barney Prine. The population was 9,253 at the 2010 census. History Prineville was founded in 1877 when Monroe Hodges filed the original plat for the city. The post office for the community had been established with the name of Prine on April 13, 1871, but changed to Prineville on December 23, 1872. The city was incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on October 23, 1880, and obtained its first high school in 1902. The Deschutes River in central Oregon is a major tributary of the Columbia River.
