285th Aviation Regiment (United States)
The 285th Aviation Regiment is a parent aviation regiment of the United States Army. The lineage of the 1st Battalion, 285th Aviation Regiment began in 1971 with the formation of the 997th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter) at Papago Army Airfield. Its Platoon D ("Delta") was equipped with UH-1M Huey gunships. On 30 September 1978 the unit was organized and federally recognized in the AZ ARNG in Phoenix as Detachment 1, Company D, 149th Aviation Battalion, an element of the 49th Armored Division. On 1 May 1982 it was designated as Company D, 149th Aviation Battalion and relocated to Marana, Arizona. On 14 April 1986 the unit transitioned to the AH-1S Cobra. In October 1986 the unit was released from the 49th Armored Division and redesignated as the 551st Aviation Battalion. The United States Army Center of Military History (CMH) is a directorate within the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command. The Institute of Heraldry remains within the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Army. The center is responsible for the appropriate use of history and military records throughout the United States Army. Traditionally, this mission has meant recording the official history of the army in both peace and war, while advising the army staff on historical matters. CMH is the flagship organization leading the Army Historical Program. CMH is also in charge of the National Museum of the United States Army, which was recently completed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. 164th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 164th Regiment (Regional Training Institute) is a training unit of the North Dakota Army National Guard. As the 164th Infantry Regiment, it was formed in the 1920s but traced its history to North Dakota units formed in the 1900s. The regiment was the first United States Army unit to land on Guadalcanal during World War II. History World War I and interwar years The 164th Infantry Regiment began its history on 8 December 1906 in the North Dakota Army National Guard as Company E, First Infantry Regiment, Williston, North Dakota.
