North American Catamaran Racing Association
Nacra Sailing is a Dutch company that manufactures a line of small catamaran sailboats, or beachcats. NACRA was founded in 1975 to tap into the market created by Hobie Alter the founder of Hobie Cat, and several other companies offering small fiberglass catamarans designed to be sailed off the beach by a crew of one or two. NACRA is an acronym that stands for North American Catamaran Racing Association, and as the name implies, the company has remained primarily focused on racing catamarans from inception. History Nacra Sailing was founded by sailboat designer Tom Roland who had previously designed the Alpha Cat, an 18-foot beach cat, in 1970. After this he designed a 36 foot, oversized one design beach catamaran as part of venture to start a professional sailboat racing series. Sailing Hydrofoil
A sailing hydrofoil, hydrofoil sailboat, or hydrosail is a sailboat with wing-like foils mounted under the hull. As the craft increases its speed the hydrofoils lift the hull up and out of the water, greatly reducing wetted area, resulting in decreased drag and increased speed. A sailing hydrofoil can achieve speeds exceeding double and in some cases triple the wind speed. Both monohull and multihull sailboats can be retrofitted with hydrofoils, although greater stability can be achieved by using the wider planform of a catamaran or trimaran. Typical configurations Some multihulls use three foils; two main forward foils provide lift so that the boat "flies" while a horizontal foil on the rudder is trimmed to drive and control altitude. The Nacra 20 is a catamaran sailing dinghy that was designed by Gino Morrelli and Pete Melvin as a one-design racer and first built in 1998. The design is a development of the Nacra F18 Infusion, using the same rudders, mast, inter-hull beams and other small parts and fittings, but with new, longer hulls. The design was originally marketed by the manufacturer as the Nacra Inter 20 and later as the Nacra 20, more recently it has been developed into the Nacra F20 Carbon and the hydrofoil-equipped Nacra F20 Carbon FCS. The Nacra F20 Carbon is a recognized World Sailing international competition class. Production The design was initially built by Performance Catamarans in Santa Ana, California, United States, but that company is out of business. The Formula 16 (F16) sport catamaran is an ISAF recognised 5 m long beach catamaran with an asymmetric spinnaker setup. It is actively sailed in two modes: doublehanded with a jib (''2-up''), and singlehanded without a jib (''1-up''). The design takes its name from the vacuum infusion process used in its hull construction. The Nacra F18 Infusion has been a recognized World Sailing as an international competition class since November 2010. The Nacra F18 Infusion design was later developed into the F18 Evolution and the NACRA F20 Carbon. The Formula 18 class, abbreviated F18, is a non-foiling, restricted development, formula-design sport catamaran class. It was started in the early 1990s and quickly grew getting class recognition by World Sailing, with large racing fleets all over the globe. Design goals The overall objective of the class is to offer popular, safe, exciting and fair racing in 18-foot catamarans. The F18 class is a "box rule" class, which means that any boat that adheres to the limited set of general design specifications may participate in all F18 races.
