NorthConnect
The NorthConnect (also known as Scotland–Norway interconnector) is a proposed 1,400MW HVDC interconnector over the floor of the North Sea. Current status The future of the project is unclear. In March 2020, the Norwegian Government placed the NorthConnect project on hold pending studies on the new UK (north of England) and German interconnectors, and the Government remained unconvinced in 2022. Interconnection If built, it would be the first HVDC route to connect Scotland's electricity network directly to that of mainland Europe (though there are existing connections from England to mainland Europe), whereas Norway already has interconnectors to Cross-Skagerrak, Denmark, NorNed, the Netherlands and NORD.LINK, Germany. Project partners The £1.75billion project is being promoted by NorthConnect, a Norwegian company specially set up by five electricity companies (Agder Energi, E-CO, Lyse Energi, Lyse, SSE plc and Vattenfall) to advance the scheme. It is hoped that the connector ...

HVDC Interconnector
This is a list of notable High-voltage direct current, high-voltage direct-current power transmission projects. HVDC projects for long-distance transmission have two (or rarely, more) converter stations and a transmission line interconnecting them. Generally overhead lines are used for Electrical interconnector, interconnection, but an important class of HVDC projects use submarine power cables. A back-to-back station has no transmission line and connects two AC grids at different frequencies or phase counts. Historical HVDC systems used the Rene Thury, Thury system of motor-generators but these have all been made obsolete by later developments such as mercury-arc valves (now also obsolete), thyristors, and Insulated-gate bipolar transistor, IGBT power transistors. Legend Line type: * Thury = Series-connected generators as designed by René Thury * Merc = Mercury-arc valve rectifier and inverter * Thyr = Thyristor rectifier and inverter * IGBT = Insulated-gate bipolar transis ...

Icelink
Icelink is a proposed electricity interconnector between Iceland and the United Kingdom via Great Britain. At , the 8001,200MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link would be the longest sub-sea power interconnector in the world. The project partners for the main proposal are National Grid plc in the UK, Landsvirkjun, the state-owned generator in Iceland, and Landsnet, the Icelandic Transmission System Operator (TSO). An alternative proposal by Edi Truell's company Disruptive Capital Finance goes by the name "Atlantic SuperConnection", but it requires UK government financing. According to Landsvirkjun, it will take about five years to complete feasibility and other work, and if a decision is made to go ahead, construction and installation would take a further five to six years. Status In 2017, the main proposal for the project was still at the feasibility stage, and, , no further progress had been reported. As of 2019, the "Atlantic SuperConnection" proposal had still not ...

Norway
Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe, the mainland territory of which comprises the western and northernmost portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The remote Arctic island of Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard also form part of Norway. Bouvet Island, located in the Subantarctic, is a dependency of Norway; it also lays claims to the Antarctic territories of Peter I Island and Queen Maud Land. The capital and largest city in Norway is Oslo. Norway has a total area of and had a population of 5,425,270 in January 2022. The country shares a long eastern border with Sweden at a length of . It is bordered by Finland and Russia to the northeast and the Skagerrak strait to the south, on the other side of which are Denmark and the United Kingdom. Norway has an extensive coastline, facing the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea. The maritime influence dominates Norway's climate, with mild lowland temperatures on the se ...

HVDC Transmission Lines
A high-voltage direct current (HVDC) electric power transmission system (also called a power superhighway or an electrical superhighway) uses direct current (DC) for electric power transmission, in contrast with the more common alternating current (AC) transmission systems. Most HVDC links use voltages between 100 kV and 800 kV. However, a 1,100 kV link in China was completed in 2019 over a distance of with a power capacity of 12 GW. With this dimension, intercontinental connections become possible which could help to deal with the fluctuations of wind power and photovoltaics. HVDC allows power transmission between AC transmission systems that are not synchronized. Since the power flow through an HVDC link can be controlled independently of the phase angle between source and load, it can stabilize a network against disturbances due to rapid changes in power. HVDC also allows the transfer of power between grid systems running at different frequencies, such as ...

Electrical Interconnectors To And From The Nordic Grid
Electricity is the set of physical phenomena associated with the presence and motion of matter that has a property of electric charge. Electricity is related to magnetism, both being part of the phenomenon of electromagnetism, as described by Maxwell's equations. Various common phenomena are related to electricity, including lightning, static electricity, electric heating, electric discharges and many others. The presence of an electric charge, which can be either positive or negative, produces an electric field. The movement of electric charges is an electric current and produces a magnetic field. When a charge is placed in a location with a non-zero electric field, a force will act on it. The magnitude of this force is given by Coulomb's law. If the charge moves, the electric field would be doing work on the electric charge. Thus we can speak of electric potential at a certain point in space, which is equal to the work done by an external agent in carrying a unit of positiv ...

NorGer
NorGer was one of two planned electricity cables between Germany and Norway. The other proposed project was NordLink, which Statnett decided to proceed with in 2015, and NorGer was cancelled. Description NorGer interconnector will start in Tonstad in Norway. From Tonstad overhead powerline runs to the Flekkefjord area. From Flekkefjord a long high voltage direct current submarine cable will run through the North Sea to Mooriem in Lower Saxony, Germany. It will be laid on the Norwegian, German and Danish Continental Shelf. The precise cable route is decided from a thorough mapping of the sea-bed along the prospective cable route. The sea route is consulted by Offshore Marine Management. NorGer will have a transmission capacity of 1,400 MW and an operating voltage of 450–500 kV. The price per kWh could rise by 0.8 øre in Norway. The sea cable is planned as a bipolar system with earthing through the return cable. This way, the disadvantages of a ground-return ...

HVDC Moyle
The Moyle Interconnector is a 500megawatt HVDC link between Scotland and Northern Ireland, running between Auchencrosh in Ayrshire and Ballycronan More in County Antrim. It went into service in 2001 and is owned and operated by Mutual Energy. Specifications The HVDC Moyle Interconnector has a capacity of 500MW. It consists of two coaxial 250kV DC cables with integrated return conductors (IRC), each cable having a transmission capacity of 250MW. The IRCs have failed through the events below, and their function restored by laying separate return conductors. The converter stations are equipped with light-triggered thyristors. The converter station at Auchencrosh is connected via a single-circuit 275kV overhead three-phase AC line, which is installed on delta-type pylon, to Coylton substation, where the connection with the high voltage grid of Great Britain takes place. The connection to Northern Ireland is then made through dual long monopolar cables, of which are submarine ca ...
