1256 Normannia ( ''prov. designation'': ) is a dark Hilda asteroid and slow rotator from the outermost regions of the asteroid belt, approximately in diameter. It was discovered on 8 August 1932, by astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in Germany. The asteroid was likely named after the Normans who gave their name to the region of Normandy in France. Orbit and classification ''Normannia'' is a member of the Hilda group of asteroids, which are in 3:2 orbital resonance with the gas-giant Jupiter. When applying the Hierarchical Clustering Method to its proper orbital elements, ''Normannia'' is a background asteroid that does not belong to neither the Hilda family () nor the Schubart family (), the only two asteroid families known within the Hilda group. SS ''Normannia'' was a German ocean liner owned by the Hamburg America Line and built by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company of Govan, Scotland. She was launched on Sunday, 9 February 1890. Career Hamburg America Line ''Normannia'' was the largest and most powerful vessel built by that yard at the time, and was the third in a quartet of similar vessels built to form Hamburg America Line's new weekly express service operating from Hamburg to New York via Southampton. A year earlier in Stettin had built the first of the class, the slightly smaller '' SS Augusta Victoria''; while Laird Brother's at Birkenhead in the UK had built the second: . The last ship of quartet to be constructed was the , also built in Stettin and launched towards the end of 1890.
