''Normanbya'' is a monotypic genus of palms containing the single species ''Normanbya normanbyi'', which is known by the common name black palm It is endemic to Queensland, Australia and is threatened by habitat destruction. Description ''Normanbya normanbyi'' is visually very similar to the more well-known Foxtail palm but is slightly smaller in all respects. It is a single-stemmed palm with attractive "bushy" fronds, similar to a bottlebrush. It grows to a height of with a small crown of fronds each measuring around long with a petiole about long. The fronds have 75-95 whorled pinnae (leaflets) up to in length, each of which are divided longitudinally into 7-11 radiating segments, giving the fronds the bushy appearance. The pinnae are dark green on the upper surface and silvery underneath and the tips are abruptly truncated (like a fishtail). Odoardo Beccari (16 November 1843 – 25 October 1920) was an Italian botanist famous for his discoveries in Indonesia, particularly New Guinea, and Australia. He has been called the greatest botanist to ever study Malesia. His author abbreviation is when citing a botanical name. Life Youth and education (1843–1864) Odoardo Beccari was born in Florence as the third child of Giuseppe di Luigi Beccari and the first child of Antonietta Minucci. Walter Hill (1820–1904) was the first curator of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Gardens Point in Brisbane, Australia. Personal life Walter Hill was born at Scotsdyke, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, on 31 December 1819, the son of David Hill and Elizabeth Beattie. Scotsdyke is virtually on the border of England and Scotland and is presumably a reference to the moat about south of the village of Canobie (now spelled ''Canonbie'').
