Norman Todd
Norman Douglas Todd (11 June 1884 – 12 May 1959) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1906 and 1908 Todd was born at Hetton-le-Hole, County Durham. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1906 season, in a match in June against Northamptonshire, when he made no runs in either innings. His next game for Derbyshire was in the 1908 season, in August against the touring Gentlemen of Philadelphia The Philadelphian cricket team was a team that represented Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in first-class cricket between 1878 and 1913. Hetton-le-Hole
Hetton-le-Hole is a town situated in the City of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. It is in the historic county of Durham. A182 runs through the town, between Houghton-le-Spring and Easington Lane (the latter borders the County Durham District), off the A690 and close to the A1(M). Ruddington is a large village in the Borough of Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire, England. The village is south of Nottingham and northwest of Loughborough. It had a population of 6,441 at the 2001 Census, increasing to 7,216 at the 2011 Census. Derbyshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Derbyshire. First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Northamptonshire. Its limited overs team is called the Northants Steelbacks – a reference to the Northamptonshire Regiment which was formed in 1881. The name was supposedly a tribute to the soldiers' apparent indifference to the harsh discipline imposed by their officers. The Philadelphian cricket team was a team that represented Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in first-class cricket between 1878 and 1913. Even with the United States having played the first ever international cricket match against Canada in 1844, the sport began a slow decline in the U.S. This decline was furthered by the rise in popularity of baseball. In Philadelphia, however, the sport remained very popular and from the end of the 19th century until the outbreak of World War I, the city produced a first class team that rivaled many others in the world. The team was composed of players from the four chief cricket clubs in Philadelphia– Germantown, Merion, Belmont, and Philadelphia. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1906 represents the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirty five years. It was their twelfth season in the County Championship and they finished bottom of the table having won two matches in the County Championship. 1906 season Derbyshire played 20 games in the County Championship, one match against the touring West Indians and one against MCC. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1908 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirty-seven years. It was their fourteenth season in the County Championship and they won five matches to finish fourteenth in the Championship table. 1908 season Derbyshire played twenty games in the County Championship and one match against the touring Gentlemen of Philadelphia. The captain for the year was Reginald Rickman. Ernest Needham was top scorer and Arnold Warren took most wickets. The most significant additions to the Derbyshire squad in the season was Leonard Oliver who played regularly for Derbyshire until 1924.
