Nordic Speedway Final
The Nordic Championships was a Motorcycle speedway final sanctioned by the FIM. In 1952 it became a qualifying round for the Speedway World Championship. From 1995 to 2001 it was known as the Scandinavian Final and was not part of the Speedway Grand Prix series. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . There are now both domestic and international competitions in a number of countries, including the Speedway World Cup, whilst the highest overall scoring individual in the Speedway Grand Prix events is pronounced the world champion. Dan Forsberg (born 25 March 1934) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from Sweden. Speedway career Forsberg was a leading speedway rider in the late 1950s. Per Olof Söderman (born 29 October 1932) is a former international speedway rider from Sweden. Speedway career Söderman reached the final of the Speedway World Championship on four occasions in the 1956 Individual Speedway World Championship, 1957 Individual Speedway World Championship, 1963 Individual Speedway World Championship and 1966 Individual Speedway World Championship. Aage Hansen (born 13 April 1935) is a former international speedway rider from Norway. Speedway career Hansen is a seven times champion of Norway, winning the Norwegian Championship in 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1963. 1957 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1957 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 12th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. The event was sponsored by the Sunday Dispatch and the attendance was 51,000. New Zealander Barry Briggs won the title after a ride off against defending champion Ove Fundin after the pair tied on 14 points after five rides each. In the ride off Fundin took the lead before Briggs forced his way to the front and with a lap to go Fundin lost control and crashed into the safety fence. Briggs duly won the £500 first prize with Fundin bruised but collecting £200. Peter Craven won the bronze and £100 after another ride off for third place. The 1956 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 11th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. The World final was sponsored by the Sunday Dispatch and was televised live. Despite being televised a crowd of 65,000 saw the first Scandinavian winner in 23 year old Ove Fundin from Sweden. Ove Fundin
Ove Fundin (born 23 May 1933) is a Swedish former professional motorcycle speedway rider. He competed in the Speedway World Championships from 1951 to 1970. Fundin is notable for winning the Speedway World Championship Final five times (1956, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1967), a record bettered only by Ivan Mauger and fellow Swede Tony Rickardsson who each won six World Championships. He finished runner-up in the championship 3 times (1957–59) and was third in 1962, 1964 and 1965 meaning that from his first win in 1956 until his last in 1967, Fundin did not finish lower than a podium place in a record eleven World Finals. He was known by the nickname of the "Flying Fox" or just "the Fox" because of his red hair. In 2013, Fundin was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycling achievements. The 1955 Individual Speedway World Championship was the tenth edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. In a very competitive World final Peter Craven of England finished one point ahead of three other riders who had to ride off for the silver medal. The defending champion Ronnie Moore won the ride off to claim silver from fellow countryman Barry Briggs and Welshman Eric Williams who both crashed leaving Moore an easy victory, Briggs took third place from Williams who missed out on a medal.
