1956 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1956 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 11th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. The World final was sponsored by the Sunday Dispatch and was televised live. Despite being televised a crowd of 65,000 saw the first Scandinavian winner in 23 year old Ove Fundin from Sweden. Individual Speedway World Championship
The World Championship of Speedway is an international competition between the highest-ranked motorcycle speedway riders of the world, run under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The first official championships were held in 1936. Today, this official FIM championship is organised as a series of Speedway Grand Prix events, where points are awarded according to performance in the event and tallied up at the end of each season. However, up to 1994, it was run as a single-night event after qualifying rounds during the season, leading up to a big final of 20 heats, where points were awarded according to riders' heat placings and then tallied up at the end. Before the World Championship received its formal recognition from the ACU and the FIM in 1936, other unofficial Speedway World Championships were staged between 1931 and 1935, in Europe, South America and Australasia. Tadeusz Teodorowicz
Tadeusz Teodorowicz (1931-1965) also known as Teo was an international speedway rider from Poland and Great Britain. Speedway career Teodorowicz rode in the top tier of British Speedway from 1959-1964, riding for Swindon Robins. He was capped by both Poland and Great Britain and reached the final of the European Championship in 1956. He would eventually become a British citizen after escaping and seeking political asylum from the communist East while on a tour of the Netherlands in September 1958. He spent four months in prison before gaining a Dutch passport and then moved to England. In England, he married Liliana Zajecka-Slonina, a local Swindon nurse of Polish origin. In 1963 he finished eighth in the British Championships, sealing a reserve spot at the final of the 1963 Individual Speedway World Championship. Oberhausen (, ) is a city on the river Emscher in the Ruhr Area, Germany, located between Duisburg and Essen ( ). Mieczysław Połukard
Mieczysław Połukard (1930 in Warsaw, Poland – 26 October 1985 in Bydgoszcz, Poland) was a Polish motorcycle speedway rider and coach, the first Polish rider to ride in the Individual World Championship Final in 1959 and won the World Team Cup in 1961. Career He began his racing career with Sparta Wrocław. In 1955 he moved to Polonia Bydgoszcz. He was the first Polish rider to ride in the Individual World Championship Final (1959) where he finished 12th with 5 points. He also represented Poland in the World Team Cup three times, in 1960 (4th place), 1961 (gold medal) and 1962 (bronze medal). He was Individual Polish Champion once in 1954. He also rode in Golden Helmet Finals, but he never finished high enough to win a medal. Accident In 1968 he decided to retire. Friedrich "Fritz" Dirtl (1928–1956) was an international speedway rider from Austria. Speedway career Dirtl was a two times champion of Austria after winning the Austrian Individual Speedway Championship in 1949 and 1951. He was also a six times Longtrack champion of Austria.
