Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary
The Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife refuge in Monson, Massachusetts. Founded by Arthur Norcross in 1939, the 8,000 acre wildlife refuge was established to preserve, protect and propagate native flora and fauna. The refuge is part of the Norcross Wildlife Foundation, which awards loans and grants, and has helped preserve over 33,000 acres since 1939. Natural history Much of the refuge is part of the Quinebaug Highlands, which in turn is part of the Eastern New England Uplift. Trails and recreation The sanctuary has 2.5 miles of trails. Monson, Massachusetts
Monson is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,150 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. The census-designated place of Monson Center lies at the center of the town. History The first colonist to settle in present-day Monson was Ian Farry, who in 1657 was granted of land by the Massachusetts General Court. He built a tavern along the Bay Path, which was the primary route from Springfield to Boston, and which ran through the northern part of Monson. It was the first house built between Springfield and Brookfield, but the tavern was short-lived; within a year or two, Fellows abandoned it for fear of attacks from local Native Americans. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1715, and in 1735 the town of Brimfield was incorporated, and included present-day Monson within its boundaries. Flora
Flora is all the plant life present in a particular region or time, generally the naturally occurring (indigenous) native plants. Quinebaug Highlands
The Quinebaug Highlands are a 172,000 acre region of mountains surrounding the Connecticut/Massachusetts border near Ashford, Eastford, Union, and Woodstock in Connecticut and Southbridge and Sturbridge in Massachusetts. It includes over acres of protected forest. The highlands are the source for several rivers, including the Quinebaug River, and are part of the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor. The highest elevation is Burley Hill in Union, CT. Recreational Opportunities The highlands many protected area offer opportunities for hiking, canoeing, kayaking, hunting and fishing.
