Norbert Sattler
Norbert Sattler (4 October 1951 – 19 January 2023) was an Austrian slalom canoeist who competed from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s. He won a silver medal in the K-1 event at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Slalom Canoeing
Canoe slalom (previously known as whitewater slalom) is a competitive sport with the aim to navigate a Spraydeck, decked canoe or kayak through a course of hanging downstream or upstream gates on Whitewater, river rapids in the fastest time possible. It is one of the two kayak and canoeing disciplines at the Summer Olympics, and is referred to by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as Canoe/Kayak Slalom. The other Olympic canoeing discipline is canoe racing, canoe sprint. Wildwater canoeing is a non-Olympic paddlesport. Canoeing At The Summer Olympics
Canoeing has been featured as competition sports in the Summer Olympic Games since the 1936 Summer Olympics, 1936 Games in Berlin, although they were demonstration sports at the 1924 Summer Olympics, 1924 Games in Paris. There are two disciplines of canoeing in Olympic competition: Whitewater slalom, slalom and Canoe racing, sprint. Two styles of boats are used in this sport: canoes with 1 or 2 canoers and kayaks with 1, 2 or 4 kayakers. This leads to the name designation of each event. For example, "C-1" is a ''canoe singles'' event and "K-2" is a ''kayak doubles'' event. Races are usually 500 metres or 1000 metres long, although there were also 10 km events from 1936 to 1956. The 1979 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships were held in Jonquière, Quebec, Canada under the auspices of International Canoe Federation. It was the 16th edition. This marked the first time the championships were held outside Europe. The mixed C2 event was not held at these championships.
