Noordkaap (Netherlands)
Noordkaap (''North Cape'') is the northernmost point of mainland Netherlands. The Noordkaap is located on the north side of the Emmapolder, on the edge of the municipality Het Hogeland in the province of Groningen. It is only accessible on foot or by bicycle. To mark the spot and attract more tourists, the then municipality of Eemsmond had the artwork 'Poort Kaap Noord', colloquially known as 'De Hemelpoort', (made in 2001) by artist René de Boer placed in 2002. The name 'Noordkaap' was coined at the same time as the artwork was placed. The spot itself is not easily recognizable as an 'extreme point' because the sea dike has a gentle curve. Cape (geography)
In geography, a cape is a headland or a promontory of large size extending into a body of water, usually the sea.Whittow, John (1984). ''Dictionary of Physical Geography''. London: Penguin, 1984, p. 80. . A cape usually represents a marked change in trend of the Coast, coastline, often making them important landmarks in sea navigation. This also makes them prone to natural forms of erosion, mainly tidal actions, which results in them having a relatively short geological lifespan. Capes can be formed by glaciers, volcanoes, and changes in sea level. Erosion plays a large role in each of these methods of formation. Eemshaven
Eemshaven (; en, Ems Harbor) is a seaport in the province of Groningen in the north of the Netherlands. In 1968, the Dutch government declared the Ems estuary (Eemsmond) to be an economic key region. One of the key developments for the region was the construction of a seaport called Eemshaven. The port was officially opened by Queen Juliana in 1973. Industry and shipping were slow to develop at the site. In 2013, a ferry service connects to the German island of Borkum. A ferry service to Rosyth, Scotland, was to start by late October 2019. The plan was officially abandoned in 2020. A number of power plants operate at the site. Both Electrabel and NUON operate a gas-fired power plant there while RWE Innogy operates a wind farm at the site. RWE is operating a coal-fired plant. Groningen (province)
Groningen (; gos, Grunn; fry, Grinslân) is the northeasternmost province of the Netherlands. It borders on Friesland to the west, Drenthe to the south, the German state of Lower Saxony to the east, and the Wadden Sea to the north. Eemsmond (; en, Ems Mouth) is a former municipality with a population of 15,864 in the north of the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of Bedum, De Marne and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. History The municipality of Hefshuizen was established on 1 January 1979 by merging the municipalities of Uithuizen and Uithuizermeeden. René De Boer
René de Boer (born 14 March 1945, in Groningen) is a Dutch sculptor. Life and work The Groningen visual artist De Boer studied sculpture at the Minerva Academy in Groningen from 1963 to 1967. He is based in Usquert as a spatial designer. In his sculptures he initially made use of the materials stone, bronze and brass, later mainly of Corten steel. Wadden Sea
The Wadden Sea ( nl, Waddenzee ; german: Wattenmeer; nds, Wattensee or ; da, Vadehavet; fy, Waadsee, longname=yes; frr, di Heef) is an intertidal zone in the southeastern part of the North Sea.
