Nomhle Mahlawe
Nomhle Maria Mahlawe (born 19 February 1941) is a South African politician. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2001 to 2009 and before that in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature. She defected to the rival Congress of the People (COPE) in 2009. Political career Before joining the national Parliament, Mahlawe was a member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature. She left the province on 16 February 2001, when she was sworn in to an ANC seat in the Eastern Cape caucus of the National Assembly; she replaced Rosemary Capa, who had left her seat after the December 2000 local elections. Mahlawe was re-elected to a full term in the National Assembly in the 2004 general election. Ahead of the 2009 general election, Mahlawe left the ANC for COPE, a new breakaway opposition party. Congress Of The People (South African Political Party)
The Congress of the People (COPE) is a South African political party formed in 2008 by former members of the African National Congress (ANC). The party was founded by former ANC members Mosiuoa Lekota, Mbhazima Shilowa and Mluleki George to contest the 2009 general election. The party was announced following a national convention held in Sandton on 1 November 2008, and was founded at a congress held in Bloemfontein on 16 December 2008. The name echoes the 1955 Congress of the People at which the Freedom Charter was adopted by the ANC and other parties, a name strongly contested by the ANC in a legal move dismissed by the Pretoria High Court. In the 2009 general election, the party received 1,311,027 votes and a 7.42% share of the vote. KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal (, also referred to as KZN and known as "the garden province") is a province of South Africa that was created in 1994 when the Zulu bantustan of KwaZulu ("Place of the Zulu" in Zulu) and Natal Province were merged. It is located in the southeast of the country, with a long shoreline on the Indian Ocean and sharing borders with three other provinces and the countries of Mozambique, Eswatini and Lesotho. Mosiuoa Lekota
Mosiuoa Gerard Patrick Lekota (born 13 August 1948) is a South African politician, who currently serves as the President and Leader of the Congress of the People since 16 December 2008. Previously as a member of the African National Congress, under President Thabo Mbeki, he served in the Cabinet of South Africa as Minister of Defence from 17 June 1999 to 25 September 2008. His nickname Terror Lekota comes from his playing style on the soccer field. He was a leader of the United Democratic Front and a key defendant in the Delmas Treason Trial, 1985 to 1988. Early life and education Lekota was born in Kroonstad. He had his primary education at Emma Farm School and most of his secondary education at Mariazel High School in Matatiele. However, he matriculated at St. Francis College in Mariannhill in 1969.
