Chersky (also anglicized Cherskiy) (russian: Че́рский; sah, Черскэй) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) and the administrative center of Nizhnekolymsky District of the Sakha Republic, Russia, located on the Kolyma River, east from Yakutsk, the capital of the republic. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 2,857. It was previously known as ''Nizhniye Kresty'' (until 1963). In 1989 the population of Chersky peaked on 11,176 inhabitants; however, like the most Soviet settlements in the Arctic, it has been largely abandoned after the dissolution of the Soviet Union as most of its residents left. Srednekolymsk (russian: Среднеколы́мск; sah, Орто Халыма, ''Orto Khalyma'') is a town and the administrative center of Srednekolymsky District in the Sakha Republic, Russia, located on the left bank of the Kolyma River, northeast of Yakutsk, the capital of the republic. Alexander Penn ( he, אלכסנדר פן, russian: Александр Пэнн; 1906 – April 1972) was an Israeli poet. Biography Avraham (Alexander) Pepliker-Stern (later Penn) was born in Nizhnekolymsk, Russian Empire. According to one version of his biography, his father, Yosef Stern, ran a heder (a Jewish religious school for young boys) and taught Hebrew. As a youth, Penn was a boxer. He moved to Moscow in 1920, to study cinema, and published his first poems in Russian that year. In 1927, he immigrated to Mandatory Palestine. He worked as a boxing trainer in Tel Aviv, as well as a farm hand, a construction worker and a guard. In Russia, Yosef Stern had changed the family name to Pepliker to avoid military service. Penn's created a nom de plume by taking the "peh" from Pepliker and the final "nun" from Stern. ''Red Pawn'' features the theme of the evil of dictatorship, specifically of Soviet Russia. ''Red Pawn'' is a spy thriller set on Strastnoy Island in an undisclosed location in northern Soviet Russia during the 1920s. On the island is a converted monastery used as an institution for political prisoners. The screenplay follows Joan Harding, aka Frances Volkontzeva, an American woman who infiltrates Strastnoy Island to free her imprisoned husband, Michael Volkontzev. Joan enters the prison under the pretext of being the new wife of the prison head Commandant Kareyev given to him by the state.
