Nilsiä Church
Nilsiä is a former small town and a municipality of Finland. It joined the city of Kuopio at the beginning of year 2013. It is located in the Northern Savonia region. The town has a population of (31 December 2012) and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . The municipality is unilingually Finnish. The last few decades have been a period of rapid progress for the town, especially its tourism. There are still plenty of traditional rural occupations, but also many kinds of commercial activities. Raimo Tuomainen
Raimo Sakari Tuomainen (born 25 November 1957 in Nilsiä, Finland) is a Finnish health sociologist and one of the authorities in so called Kuopio discipline, which emphasizes the need to control the expansion of medicalization in Western countries. His publications deal also with religion, science, demography and health care administration. He works at Kuopio University Hospital. Tuomainen has a political career, too. He has been a vice-chairman in the party council of Finnish Green League and a city counsellor in Kuopio. His ideological interests are especially in social ethics and social fairness. He underlines the meaning of social climate in human being's welfare. Tuomainen has presented the term ”green feminism”, which means that people should get rid of strict male and female roles and the society should purposefully promote that. Pauli Pitkänen (4 November 1911 – 28 September 1941) was a Finnish cross-country skier who competed in the 1930s. Ville Kyrönen (14 January 1891 – 24 May 1959) was a Finnish long-distance runner. Kyrönen won a silver medal in the team cross country event at the 1912 Summer Olympics. Taavetti Lukkarinen
Taavetti Lukkarinen (8 November 1884 in Nilsiä – 2 October 1916 in Oulu) was a former Kemi Oy's foreman from Keminmaa, Finland, who was sentenced to death for treason after helping German prisoners of war who had fled the Kirov Railway construction site via Finnish Lapland to Sweden. He was not an actual recruiter of the Jäger Movement. Lukkarinen was caught helping German prisoners of war on 26 December 1915 at Koivu railway station. He had hidden three of his German sledges that had been lifted on a train in Rovaniemi. Lukkarinen and three Germans were arrested. Lukkarinen managed to escape to Sweden, but returned to Finland with a forged passport due to homesickness. Fearing a train inspection at Oulu railway station, he fell off the train around Kiviniemi station. This was discovered and Lukkarinen was arrested by the Russian gendarmeries in June 1916.
