Christianity in Albania was established throughout the country in 325 AD. From 1100 AD, the Byzantine Empire carried out Church missions in the area. In relation to the increasing influence of Venice, the Franciscans started to settle down in the area in the 13th century. From the 15th century to the 19th century, under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, Christianity was replaced by Islam as the majority religion in Albania during the Ottoman Empire. Nikolla bey Ivanaj or Nikollë Ivanaj (1879–1951) was an Albanian journalist, publisher and writer from Montenegro. He was considered one of the "distinguished personalities of the most conscious Albanian nationalism" and was included in Albanian insurgents' main staff during 1911. Ivanaj was the first Albanian writer from Montenegro with his work ''The flower of eternity'' ( sq, Lulet e pasosme) published in Tirana in 1943. In the 1905–08 period he published the newspaper ''Shpnesa e Shqypnisë'' (The Hope of Albania) in Dubrovnik, Trieste and Rome, getting financial aid from the different sides. Millosh Gjergj Nikolla (; 13 October 191126 August 1938), commonly known by the acronym pen name Migjeni, was an Albanian poet and writer, considered one of the most important of the 20th century. After his death, he was recognized as one of the main influential writers of interwar Albanian literature. Migjeni is considered to have shifted from revolutionary romanticism to critical realism during his lifetime.
