Nikkei Sho
The Nikkei Sho (Japanese 日経賞) is a Japanese Grade 2 flat horse race in Japan for Thoroughbreds of at least four years of age. It is run over a distance of 2,500 metres at Nakayama Racecourse in March. The Nikkei Sho was first run in 1953 and was elevated to Grade 2 status in 1984. Among the winners of the race have been Symboli Rudolf, Rice Shower, Meisho Doto, Matsurida Gogh, Fenomeno and Gold Actor. Nakayama Racecourse
is located in Funabashi, Chiba, Japan. It is used for horse racing. It has a capacity of 165,676. It was built in 1990. Physical attributes Nakayama Race Course has two grass courses, a dirt course, and a jump course. The turf's measures 1840m (1 1/8 miles + 97 feet) with a 1600m and a 2200m chute, and the measures 1667m (1 mile + 189 feet) with a 1400m chute. Races can be run on the "A Course" rail setting (on the hedge), the "B Course" setting (rail out 3 meters), or the "C Course" setting (rail out 7 meters). 1000m, 1400m, 1800m, 2000m, 2500m and 3600m races run on the inner oval, while 1200m, 1600m, 2200m, 2600m and 4000m races run on the outer oval. 3200m races run on the outer oval first, then the inner oval. Fenomeno (horse)
Fenomeno ( ja, フェノーメノ, link=no, foaled 20 April 2009) is a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After winning one minor race as a two-year-old he emerged as a top-class performer in the following year, taking the Aoba Sho and St Lite Kinen and finishing a close second in both the Tokyo Yushun and the autumn edition of the Tenno Sho. In his third campaign he won the Nikkei Sho and the spring edition of the Tenno Sho before his season was ended by injury. At the end of that year he was rated the best horse in the world over extended distances. He won a second Tenno Sho in 2014 but failed to win again and was retired to stud at the end of 2015. Background Fenomeno is a dark brown horse with a white sock on his right hind leg bred in Hokkaido, Japan by the Oiwake Farm. Hanshin Racecourse
is located in Takarazuka, Hyogo, Japan. It has a capacity of 139,000 and it is used for horse racing. The land was originally owned by Kawanishi Aircraft Company, which manufactured combat planes during World War II. After the World War II, GHQ ordered the company to stop manufacturing combat planes, which ended in closing the factory. In 1949, Keihanshin Keiba K.K. built the Hanshin Racecourse. The racecourse was transferred to Japan Racing Association in 1955. A major reconstruction was completed in 1991, and another in 2006. Titleholder (horse)
Titleholder (Japanese: タイトルホルダー, foaled 10 February 2018) is a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse. He showed very promising form as a two-year-old in 2020 when he won his first start before finishing second in the Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes and fourth in the Hopeful Stakes. In the following spring he won the Yayoi Sho and ran second in the Satsuki Sho before returning in the autumn to record his biggest win in the Kikuka Sho. He improved again as a four-year-old when he added victories in the Nikkei Sho, Tenno Sho (Spring) and Takarazuka Kinen. Background Titleholder is a bay colt with a white stripe bred in Japan by the Okada Stud. As a foal in 2018 he was consigned to the Select Sale and was bought for ¥21,600,000 by Hiroshi Yamada. Yasunari Iwata
(born March 12, 1974; from Himeji, Hyōgo Prefecture) is a Japanese jockey who rode the winner of the 2006 Melbourne Cup, Delta Blues. It was Iwata's first race outside Japan. Yuichi Fukunaga
is a Japanese jockey who has won 29 Grade 1 races in Japan and abroad. He is affiliated with the Japan Racing Association (JRA) in Rittō. His father is former jockey Yoichi Fukunaga who was said to be a "genius" during his active career, and his uncle is Takashi Kitamura, also a former jockey. His wife is former Fuji TV announcer Midori Matsuo. Since July 2016, he has a management contract with Horipro, the entertainment production in which his wife is also affiliated. On December 8, 2022, following his trainer license issue being issued by the JRA, Fukunaga announced that he would retire as a jockey at the end of February next year and make a transition in to becoming a horse trainer. Matsurida Gogh (foaled March 15, 2003) is a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse and the winner of the 2007 Arima Kinen. Career Matsurida Gogh's first race was on August 21, 2005, at Sapporo, where he came in first. He won the Hidaka Tokubetsu on August 19, 2006, and then won the Christmas Cup on December 23, 2006, to close the year. He won the American Jockey Club Cup on January 21, 2007, and then took the Sankei Sho All Comers on September 23, 2007. He grabbed the biggest win of his career by winning the 2007 Arima Kinen on December 23. He then won the Nikkei Sho on March 29, 2008.
