Nik Turner
Nicholas Robert Turner (26 August 1940 – 10 November 2022) was an English musician, best known as a member of space rock pioneers Hawkwind. Turner played saxophone and flute, as well as being a vocalist and composer. While with Hawkwind, Turner was known for his experimental free jazz stylisations and outrageous stage presence, often donning full makeup and Ancient Egypt-inspired costumes. 1940–1969: Early years Turner was born in Oxford in August 1940 to a theatrical family, although his father was working in a munitions factory. At the age of 13 his family moved to the Kent seaside resort of Margate where he worked at the local funfair during the summer holiday season, befriending another seasonal worker Robert Calvert. ''The Chronicle of the Black Sword'' is the fourteenth studio album by the English space rock group Hawkwind, released in 1985. It spent two weeks on the UK albums chart peaking at #65. The album is based upon the adventures of Elric of Melniboné, a recurring character in the novels of science fiction author Michael Moorcock, a long-standing associate of the group, who contributes lyrics to one track on the album. Background After two years of constant line-up changes, guitarist Dave Brock (the only member who has remained since the band's formation) settled on a line-up of himself, guitarist Huw Lloyd-Langton, keyboardist Harvey Bainbridge, bassist Alan Davey, and drummer Danny Thompson (son of Pentangle's bassist Danny Thompson). ''This is Hawkwind, Do Not Panic'' is a 1984 live album by the English space rock group Hawkwind. The album consisted of two discs: an LP which was recorded during the group's 1980 ''Levitation'' tour; and a 12" EP recorded at their June 1984 appearance at the Stonehenge Free Festival. The group's line-up had changed by their June 1984 appearance at the Stonehenge Free Festival, with guitarists Dave Brock, Huw Lloyd-Langton and saxophonist Nik Turner remaining, Harvey Bainbridge switching from bass to keyboards. They were joined by bassist Alan Davey and drummer Clive Deamer, although Danny Thompson Jr deputised for Deamer on the Stonehenge recording. The group undertook a 13 date UK tour in November 1984 to promote this album, with support from Wildfire. The Sheffield University show on 27 November was recorded, and part released on '' Undisclosed Files Addendum'' (1995). ''Choose Your Masques'' is the thirteenth studio album by the English space rock group Hawkwind, released in 1982. It spent five weeks on the UK Albums Chart, peaking at No. 29. The group's line-up for this album remained unchanged from the previous ''Church of Hawkwind'' album, although for this recording the group started to heavily use drum machines and drum loops, with most of Griffin's contributions being relegated to disjointed drum fills. Griffin was unhappy with this role, and group-leader Dave Brock was dissatisfied with Griffin's timekeeping, so they mutually agreed to part company, although Griffin reluctantly agreed to fulfil the scheduled tour commitments. The album was recorded in June and July 1982 at Rockfield Studios. Science fiction author Michael Moorcock contributed lyrics to the album, but credited his wife Lynda Steele in order to bypass his music publisher Douglas Smith with whom he was in dispute. Barney Bubbles (born Colin Fulcher; 30 July 1942 – 14 November 1983) was an English graphic artist whose work encompassed graphic design and music video direction. Bubbles, who also sketched and painted privately, is best known for his distinctive contribution to the design practices associated with the British rock music, British independent music scene of the 1970s and 1980s. His record sleeves, laden with symbols and riddles, were his most recognisable output.
