NikNaks (South African Snack)
NikNaks, also known as "amaNikNaks," is the brand name for a popular brand of South African Cheese puffs manufactured by the Simba Chips company since 1972. Originally only coming in a "Cheese" flavour. It is normally sold in 55 gram and 135 gram bags, and is primarily made from maize, vegetable oil, salt and cheese. Though based in South Africa and mostly consumed in the Southern African region, NikNaks are consumed internationally due to South Africa's diaspora. Branding The brand features the brand mascot, Nik the Nak, on a yellow packet with different coloured diamonds arranged in a circular pattern depending on the flavour. Green for fruit chutney, brown for spicy beef, and pink for cheese. In the 2000s the image of the brand mascot was altered due to concerns over the racially prejudicial nature of the original image featuring a stylised Kaapse Klopse minstrel. Nik Naks are a type of extruded corn snack previously manufactured by Sooner Foods in Scunthorpe, England. The snack was introduced as Crunchy Wotsits, with a cheese flavour, in 1981. The brand was purchased by Golden Wonder in 1987 and then sold to United Biscuits in 2006. In December 2012, United Biscuits agreed to sell the KP Snacks brand, including Nik Naks, to the European Intersnack Group. , Nik Naks are made in three flavours (all of the format "X 'n' Y") with different colour packaging for each. Kaapse Klopse
The Kaapse Klopse (or simply Klopse), formerly known as the Coon Carnival and officially called Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, is a Cape coloured minstrel festival that takes place annually on 2 January in Cape Town, South Africa. It is also referred to as Tweede Nuwe jaar (Second New Year). As many as 13,000 minstrels take to the streets garbed in bright colours, either carrying colourful umbrellas or playing an array of musical instruments. The minstrels are self-organised into klopse ("clubs" in Kaapse Afrikaans, but more accurately translated as troupes in English). The custom has been preserved since the mid-19th century.
