Nicușor Dan
Nicușor Dan (born 20 December 1969) is a Romanian activist, mathematician, former member of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania as well as former founder and leader of the centre-right Romanian political party Save Romania Union (USR). He is currently serving as the Mayor of Bucharest following the 2020 Romanian local elections. Biography Born in Făgăraș, Brașov County, he attended the Radu Negru High School in his native city. He won first prizes in the International Mathematical Olympiads in 1987 and 1988 with perfect scores. Dan moved to Bucharest at the age of 18 and began studying mathematics at the University of Bucharest. In 1992, he moved to France to continue studying mathematics: he followed the courses of the École Normale Supérieure, one of the most prestigious French ''grande écoles'', where he gained a master's degree. The Mayor of Bucharest ( ro, Primarul General al Municipiului București), sometimes known as the General Mayor, is the head of the Bucharest City Hall in Bucharest, Romania, which is responsible for citywide affairs, such as the water system, the transport system and the main boulevards. The title of General Mayor is sometimes used to distinguish the office from that of the mayors that lead each of Bucharest's six administrative sectors, and which are responsible for local area affairs, such as secondary streets, parks, schools and cleaning services. The "Simion Stoilow" Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy is a research institute in Bucharest, Romania. It is affiliated with the Romanian Academy, and it is named after Simion Stoilow, one of its founders. History On December 29, 1945, a group of twenty Romanian mathematicians from various institutions in Bucharest led by Dimitrie Pompeiu held a meeting at the University of Bucharest to establish the ''Institute of Mathematical Sciences'' with the aim of "promoting scientific research in mathematical sciences, through communications, talks, publications, congresses, and other means proper to this aim". The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is a mathematical olympiad for pre-university students, and is the oldest of the International Science Olympiads. The first IMO was held in Romania in 1959. It has since been held annually, except in 1980. More than 100 countries, representing over 90% of the world's population, send teams of up to six students, plus one team leader, one deputy leader, and observers. Radu Negru National College ( ro, Colegiul Național Radu Negru) is a high school located at 1 Școlii Street, Făgăraș, Romania. History Origins in Austria-Hungary The school traces its origins to 1869, when writer Ion Codru-Drăgușanu founded a Romanian-language school in what was then Austria-Hungary, naming it after the legendary ruler Radu Negru. Affiliated with the Romanian Orthodox Church, it operated from a building adjacent to a church, featuring four grades and three teachers. Subsequently, two high-school classes and a school for adults were added.
