Nicosia Municipality
Nicosia Municipality ( el, Δήμος Λευκωσίας, ''Dimos Lefkosias''; tr, Lefkoşa Belediyesi) is the municipal government which is responsible for all the municipal duties of the southern part of Nicosia. History The municipal council was elected according to the Municipal Ordinance of 1882, and the District Commissioner with one Greek and one Turkish adviser undertook municipal affairs since November 1884. In 1930, the municipal legislation which made the new corporations liable to government audit, was enacted. However, after the 1931 uprising, the municipal councils were supplemented by government appointees. The municipal elections introduced again in 1943. Until 1958, the Town Clerk held the authority over a team of Greek and Turkish employees who undertook municipal fairs for the whole city. Nicosia ( ; el, Λευκωσία, Lefkosía ; tr, Lefkoşa ; hy, Նիկոսիա, romanized: ''Nikosia''; Cypriot Arabic: Nikusiya) is the largest city, capital, and seat of government of Cyprus. It is located near the centre of the Mesaoria plain, on the banks of the River Pedieos. Ledra Street
Ledra Street ( el, Οδός Λήδρας ''Odos Lidras''; tr, Ledra Caddesi) is a major shopping thoroughfare in central Nicosia, Cyprus, which links North Nicosia, the part of the city under the control of the ''de facto'' Northern Cyprus, and south Nicosia. It is the site of the former Ledra Street barricade, across the United Nations buffer zone. The barricade symbolised the division of Nicosia between the Greek south and Turkish north. It was removed in April 2008 and Ledra Street became the sixth crossing between the southern and northern parts of Cyprus. Ledra Street runs parallel to Onasagorou Street. The name of the street refers to the ancient city-kingdom of Ledra, established in 1050 BC, that was located in the centre of the island where the capital city is today. Eleftheria Square
Eleftheria Square ( el, Πλατεία Ελευθερίας; tr, Eleftheria Meydanı, Özgürlük Meydanı); literally meaning Liberty Square, is the main square in central Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus, in Europe. It forms the intersection of Ledra and Onasagorou streets with Stasinou, Omirou, Kostaki Pantelidi, Konstandinou Palaiologou and Evagorou avenues. It is considered one of Zaha Hadid's Top 35 projects. Overview The name translates as ''Liberty Square'' in English. Previously the square was called Metaxas Square, in reference to the Greek statesman Ioannis Metaxas. It was renamed in 1974, following a competition held at the suggestion of the then Mayor of Nicosia. It is located in the centre of the town below the Venetian walls of the medieval city. Tower 25
Tower 25 (also called The White Walls) is a high-rise building located in the centre of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. It was designed by the architect Jean Nouvel and is a major addition to Nicosia's landmarks owing to its original design and location. Standing 62 meters tall, Tower 25 is the ninth tallest building in Cyprus. The ground floor, the mezzanine areas and the six floors above them are offices of Ernst & Young (EY). The next seven floors contain apartments overlooking the whole capital. The penthouse occupies two top floors. Its design resembles traditional Cypriot architecture, and contains a swimming pool. Most of the apartments, including the penthouse, were sold before construction commenced. The building cost approximately 25 million euros and was finished by the beginning of 2013. Michael Zampelas
Michael Herodotou Zampelas (19 March 1937 – 15 May 2019) was a Cypriot businessman, politician and philanthropist. Career Michael Zampelas, a Cypriot by birth was educated in the United Kingdom and became a Chartered Accountant in 1965. In 1970, together with his associates, he established Coopers & Lybrand an accounting and consulting firm in Cyprus and Athens, thus opening new horizons for the development of the accounting profession in Cyprus and Greece. As a result of a merger in 1998 the firm was renamed PricewaterhouseCoopers. He served as an elected member of the board of the European Organisation of Coopers & Lybrand Europe (1991-1999). Michael Zampelas served the firm as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from its establishment in 1970 until 2001 and as a non- Executive Chairman from 2002 until 2005. Eleni Mavrou
Eleni Mavrou (, ) is the Executive Chairman of Dialogos Media Group. She served as Minister of Interior of the Republic of Cyprus until February 2013. Until 2011, she was the mayor of the capital city Nicosia for 5 years. Thus, Ms Mavrou became the first female mayor of the Nicosia, as well as the first female Minister of Interior. Born in Kyrenia in 1961, her family was forced to leave their house in 1974 due to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and since then has been residing in Nicosia. Student career Mavrou initially studied Civil Engineering at the Higher Technical Institute in Nicosia, but continued her education at the University of London, where she obtained her BSc degree in Politics and International Relations. During her student years, Ms Mavrou was actively involved in Cypriot local student movement, and later in the progressive youth movement. Nicosia Turkish Municipality
Nicosia Turkish Cypriot Municipality ( tr, Lefkoşa Türk Belediyesi) is the governing body of North Nicosia province of TRNC. It was established in 1958 and was recognized by Article 173 of the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus. After 1974 and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, it became the municipality of North Nicosia.
