Nicos Nicolaides (politician)
Nicos Nicolaides ( el, Νίκος Νικολαΐδης; born 2 November 1953) is a Greek Cypriot politician. He is currently the Mayor of Limassol. From May 2011 to December 2016, he was a Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives of Cyprus, representing the Limassol constituency under the banner of social democratic party EDEK. Personal life Nicolaides was born in Limassol in 1953. He studied electrical engineering at Dartmouth College and the University of Southern California, earning a master's degree. Nicolaides is married to Elena Ioannou and has two children and a grandson. He speaks English and French fluently. Political career Nicolaides was Minister of Communications and Works in the Christofias cabinet between 2008 and 2010. Limassol (; el, Λεμεσός, Lemesós ; tr, Limasol or ) is a city on the southern coast of Cyprus and capital of the district with the same name. Limassol is the second largest urban area in Cyprus after Nicosia, with an urban population of 183,658 and a metropolitan population of 239,842. The Movement for Social Democracy ( el, Κίνημα Σοσιαλδημοκρατών, translit=Kinima Sosialdimokraton, EDEK) is a Greek Cypriot, social-democratic political party in Cyprus. Overview The party was founded by Vasos Lyssaridis in 1969 as the United Democratic Union of the Centre, EDEK (, ΕΔΕΚ). It was originally a strongly anti-imperialist Third World socialist party with roots in the struggle against British colonial rule, influenced by the philosophies of Baathism, Muammar Gaddafi and Nasserism, and by the 1968 movement. Since the early 1980s, EDEK has evolved into a European-style social-democratic party. It has however not given up its nationalist orientations. Solidarity Movement (Cyprus)
The Solidarity Movement ( el, Κίνημα Αλληλεγγύη, ''Kinima Allilengyi'') is a Greek Cypriot nationalist party in Cyprus. It was founded in 2016 by Eleni Theocharous. Theocharous departed the conservative Democratic Rally in November 2015, in protest to their support of a bizonal, bifederal settlement to the Cyprus problem. She established the Solidarity Movement in January 2016 and right-wing Evroko merged with the party in March of the same year. The Solidarity Movement is contesting 56 seats in the 2016 Cypriot legislative election. On 9 March 2016, Eleni Theocharous joined the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists, after she retired from the Democratic Rally and the European People's Party.
