Nicolae Popa (businessman)
Nicolae Popa (born 1965) is a Romanian criminal. In 2006 he was sentenced trial in absentia, ''in absentia'' to 15 years in jail for fraud and embezzlement related to the 2000 collapse of the Fondul Național de Investiții (FNI) Ponzi scheme, with an estimated prejudice of 1.2 million euros spread between some 130,000 investors. The sentence was final; all appeals were exhausted. Popa was also sentenced to 12 years in jail for a different affair, Fondul Național de Acumulare (FNA), but this decision may still be appealed. On the run since 2002, Popa was apprehended in December 2009 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Sorin Ovidiu Vântu, a high-profile businessman and owner of several newspapers and television stations, declared after Popa's apprehension that he still considers Popa a friend and that the sentences are "a giant manipulation". Trial in absentia is a criminal proceeding in a court of law in which the person who is subject to it is not physically present at those proceedings. is Latin for "in (the) absence". Its meaning varies by jurisdiction and legal system. In common law legal systems, the phrase is more than a spatial description. In these systems, it suggests a recognition of a violation to a defendant's right to be present in court proceedings in a criminal trial. Conviction in a trial in which a defendant is not present to answer the charges is held to be a violation of natural justice. Ponzi Scheme
A Ponzi scheme (, ) is a form of fraud that lures investors and pays profits to earlier investors with funds from more recent investors. Named after Italian businessman Charles Ponzi, the scheme leads victims to believe that profits are coming from legitimate business activity (e.g., product sales or successful investments), and they remain unaware that other investors are the source of funds. Sorin Ovidiu Vîntu (; 23 November 1955, Bucharest) is a Romanian businessman and owner of the Realitatea-Cațavencu media company. In 2007, he was considered the 4th richest man in Romania, with an estimated net worth between 2.1 and 2.3 billion euros. On 16 June 2009, during a TV interview on B1 TV, former president Traian Băsescu accused Vîntu of tax evasion by allegedly not paying 60 million euros worth of Value Added Tax. Vântu later denied the accusation, and sued Băsescu for libel, asking for 1 million euros in damages. Vîntu was sentenced to two years in prison in 2005 for using some false documents to gain majority shares in the Investment and Development Bank (BID), which went bankrupt in 2002. 2009 Romanian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Romania in 2009. The first round took place on 22 November, with a run-off round between the top two candidates Traian Băsescu and Mircea Geoană on 6 December 2009. Although most exit polls suggested a win for Geoană in the runoff, the authorities declared Băsescu the narrow victor with 50.33% of the votes. To date, it is the closest election in Romanian history. Traian Băsescu (; born 4 November 1951) is a conservatism, conservative Romanian politician who served as President of Romania from 2004 to 2014. Prior to his presidency, Băsescu served as Romanian Minister of Transport on multiple occasions between 1991 and 2000, and as Mayor of Bucharest from 2000 to 2004. Dan Mircea Geoană (; born 14 July 1958) is a Romanian politician and former ambassador who served as president of the upper chamber of the Romanian Parliament, the Senate from 20 December 2008 until he was revoked on 23 November 2011. From 21 April 2005 until 21 February 2010, he was the head of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, ro, Partidul Social Democrat), Romania's largest political party to this day.
