Nicky Joyce
Nicky Joyce is an inter-county Gaelic football player for Galway. He plays his club football with Killererin and was a member of the Galway senior team from 2003 to 2010 but returned in 2012. Playing career County Joyce began playing for senior in early 2003 after being called up by former manager John O'Mahony to play alongside his cousin Pádraic Joyce. Killererin GAA
Killererin ( ga, Cill Fhir Iarainn) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the Tuam area in County Galway, Ireland. The club is a member of the Galway GAA. A Gaelic football club, Killererin fields underage teams up to U-16s play in the Galway league and championships. History Founded in 1889, the club was originally named Killererin John Dillon's. Competing for much of the 20th century in the junior grade, the club won its first county junior championship title in 1968. Promoted to senior grade, the club won the Galway Senior Football Championship in 1976. The club went on to win several club titles, and won its sixth county title defeating Corofin in October 2010. They faced St Brigid's of Roscommon in the 2010 Connacht Senior Club Football Championship final, but were beaten in extra time. Several Killererin players have played for Galway inter-county teams. The Galway County Boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae na Gaillimhe) or Galway GAA are one of the 32 county boards in Ireland; they are responsible for Gaelic games in County Galway, and for the Galway county teams. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. John O'Mahony (Mayo Politician)
John O'Mahony (born 8 June 1953) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician and former football manager who served as a Senator from 2016 to 2020, after being nominated by the Taoiseach. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Mayo constituency from 2007 to 2016. Early and personal life O'Mahony is a native of Kilmovee, County Mayo. He is a graduate of University College Galway. He taught for many years at St Nathy's College, Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon. O'Mahony is married to Gerardine Towey, they have five daughters. Sports career O'Mahony was manager of the Mayo Gaelic football team, and formerly led Galway to two All-Ireland Senior Football Championship victories in 1998 and 2001, and guided Leitrim to success in the 1994 Connacht Senior Football Championship. Pádraic Joyce
Pádraic Joyce (born 1 April 1977) is a Gaelic football manager and former player who played as a forward. He has been manager of the senior Galway county team since 2019. Joyce won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship twice with Galway as a player and received three All Star Awards. He won four Galway Senior Football Championships while playing for the Killererin club. He also captained Ireland in the International Rules Series. In May 2020, the ''Irish Independent'' named Joyce at number sixteen in its "Top 20 footballers in Ireland over the past 50 years". Connacht Senior Football Championship
The Connacht Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition for the senior county teams of Connacht GAA. All of the counties of Connacht participate in the championship, as well as counties London and New York. The winning team receives the Nestor Cup. The Connacht Senior Football Championship is run on a knock-out basis in which once a team loses they are eliminated from the competition. A series of games are played during the summer months and the final is played in June or July. The winner progresses directly to the All-Ireland Super 8s, while losing teams progress to the All-Ireland Qualifiers (before 2001 the All-Ireland was a straight knock-out format meaning all losing teams were eliminated after a single defeat).
