Nick Ross (footballer, Born 1862)
Nicholas John Ross (6 December 1862 – 7 August 1894) was a Scottish footballer. Career He played for, and captained, Heart of Midlothian in the early stages of his football career before being persuaded to join Preston North End by club secretary William Sudell who also provided him with a job as a slater. Preston North End converted Ross from a centre-forward to a left-back. Ross was made captain of Preston and over the next few years earned a reputation as one of the best defenders in English football. He featured in the 1886–87 FA Cup Semi-Final where Preston were beaten 2–1 by West Bromwich Albion. He was transferred to Everton in July 1888 where he was reportedly paid £10 per month – a significantly above-average wage for a footballer at the time. 1888–89 Season Nick Ross made his League debut on 8 September 1888, playing as a full–back, at Anfield, the then home of Everton. Andrew Hannah
Andrew Boyd Hannah (17 September 1864 – 29 May 1940) was a Scottish international footballer who played as a right back. He missed just two games in Everton's 1890–91 title winning season. In 1892 he became the first captain of Liverpool. In 2006 he was listed in 100 players who shook the Kop, a Liverpool fan poll. 1890 National League Of Baseball Of Great Britain
The 1890 National League of Baseball of Great Britain was the first, and to date only, professional baseball championship for the national baseball title of Great Britain. The National League's headquarters were located at 38 Holborn Viaduct, London. Aston Villa were the National League champions, despite Derby Baseball Club leading the league for much of the season, following their contentious dismissal from the championship, mid-season. Aston Villa were officially known as Birmingham Baseball Club Limited, with their uniforms emblazoned with ‘Birmingham AV’ on the jersey, despite being officially part of the famous football club. Preston North End Baseball Club
Preston North End Baseball Club were a short lived English professional baseball club, who played their home games at Deepdale, competing for the 1890 National League of Baseball of Great Britain. Preston North End Baseball Club Limited were formally established on 21 June 1890, with £2,000 in £10 shares, with the Directors being Thomas Slaney, William Sudell, J. Brown (both of Preston North End), Morton Betts, Jim Hart and Newton Crane, and were registered by Richard Barnes. Ernest Needham
Ernest Needham (21 January 1873 – 8 March 1936) was an English footballer and cricketer. He played in sixteen international football matches for England and captained the side in 1901. He was an outstanding left half who played for Sheffield United from 1891 until 1910. He was instrumental in their promotion campaign of 1892–93 and then captained their team from 1895 to 1905. Under his captaincy, United won the Football League First Division in 1898 and the FA Cup in 1899 and 1902. He played first-class cricket for Derbyshire from 1901 to 1912. William Pickford
William Pickford (1861–1938) was an English football administrator, who played an important role in the early development of The Football Association, in which he was its most recent President not to come from the British royal family. Early life Pickford was born in Lancashire and was initially interested in rugby before, in 1878, he was invited to attend a football match between Blackburn District and Bolton. Remembering this later, Pickford wrote: I fell in love with 'soccer' at once. The players were not bunched together half the time in struggling heaps, but each man in his place, like chessmen, and the footcraft, passing and speed fascinated me. He joined a local club where he became a regular goalscorer for the reserve team and was soon promoted to the first team. 1890–91 Football League
The 1890– 91 Football League was the third Football league season. After dominating and being crowned champions for the first two football league seasons Preston North End slipped to second and Everton won the league with a two-point gap. Meanwhile, there had been changes in the league since the last football league season, Stoke had not been re-elected to the football league, so joined the rival Football Alliance.
