Niagara (electoral District)
Niagara was a federal electoral district in the Canadian province of Ontario, which was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1883. It is sometimes also considered one of Ontario's historic counties, as it was listed in some post-Confederation census records as a county of residence. Niagara consisted of the Lincoln County townships of Niagara and Grantham, including the towns of Niagara-on-the-Lake and St. Catharines. The electoral district was abolished in 1882 when it was merged into Lincoln and Niagara riding. Lincoln And Niagara
Lincoln and Niagara was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1883 to 1904. It was located in the province of Ontario. This riding was created from parts of Lincoln and Niagara ridings. It was initially defined as consisting of the town and township of Niagara, the city of St. Catharines, the townships of Grantham, Clinton and Louth, and the villages of Beamsville, Merritton and Port Dalhousie. In 1892, the townships of Pelham and Gainsborough were added to the riding. William Alexander Thomson
William Alexander Thomson (November 1, 1816 – October 1, 1878) was a Canadian author, railway promoter and political figure. He represented Welland in the House of Commons of Canada from 1872 to 1878 as a Liberal member. He was born in Wigtownshire, Scotland and educated there. He emigrated to New York state before moving to Queenston, Upper Canada in 1834. He helped establish the Erie and Niagara Railway, later serving as its president. Thomson was an unsuccessful candidate for the Niagara federal seat, losing to Angus Morrison. Josiah Burr Plumb
Josiah Burr Plumb (25 March 1816 – 12 March 1888) was an American-born Canadian businessman and parliamentarian. Born in East Haven, Connecticut, Plumb immigrated to Canada in 1865 and settled near Niagara Falls, Ontario. Soon thereafter he became active in the Conservative Party of Canada. He was elected three times as a member of parliament for Niagara in the House of Commons of Canada. Angus Morrison, (January 20, 1822 – June 10, 1882) was a Canadian lawyer and political figure in Ontario. He represented Niagara in the House of Commons of Canada as a Conservative member from 1867 to 1874. He served as the 21st Mayor of Toronto from 1876 to 1878. He was also a member of the Orange Order in Canada. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1822 and came to Upper Canada with his father in 1830; they later moved to York (Toronto). Morrison joined the law office of his older brother, Joseph, as a clerk in 1839, was called to the bar in 1845 and opened his own practice in Toronto. He was elected to city council in 1853 and 1854. Lincoln County, Ontario
Lincoln County is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. The county was formed in 1792. In 1845, the southern portion of Lincoln County was separated to form Welland County. In some census and election records from the late 19th century, the townships of Caistor and Gainsborough (which can be seen on the map below) were enumerated as part of Monck County, while Grantham and Niagara Townships were enumerated as part of Niagara County. However, neither Monck nor Niagara ever existed as incorporated municipal counties, but rather as electoral districts. In 1970, Lincoln and Welland Counties were amalgamated to form the Regional Municipality of Niagara.
