Ng May Ying
Ng May Ying 吳美英 (born Pun Kwai Mui 潘桂妹) is a Cantonese opera performer. Also known as Ng Mei Ying, she comes from a family of Cantonese opera actors. Ng Shang Ying 吳尚英, her adoptive father, was a ‘man mou sang’ (actor who can play both civil and martial roles). Her uncle, Ng Hon Ying 吳漢英, was a ‘mou sang’ (specializes in martial roles). Since November 1994, Ng May Ying is the leading ‘hua dan’ 正印花旦 (actress) of Ming Chee Sing Opera Troupe 鳴芝聲劇團. The Troupe’s leading ‘man mou sang’ is Joyce Koi Ming Fai 蓋鳴暉, a Cantonese opera male impersonator. Ng May Ying is also one of the Big Four Cantonese Opera ‘hua dan’ of Hong Kong. Cantonese opera is one of the major categories in Chinese opera, originating in southern China's Guangdong Province. It is popular in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong, Macau and among Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. Ming Chee Sing Chinese Opera Troupe
Ming Chee Sing Chinese Opera Troupe () is one of the top Cantonese Opera troupes in Hong Kong. The troupe was founded in 1990 by Lau Kam Yiu () to promote a young opera talent, Joyce Koi Ming Fai (). Lau himself, a retired businessman, later took over the management of Ming Chee Sing. After the demise of Lau Kam Yiu in 2011, Ming Chee Sing Chinese Opera Troupe came under the management of his daughter, Lau Kok Ying (). Leung Sing-Bor
Leung Sing Poh MBE (1908 – 12 February 1981) was an actor, host and former Cantonese opera performer from Hong Kong. Leung was a pioneer actor of TVB, and was also the former chairman of Chinese Artist Association of Hong Kong from 1965 to 1970. He was nicknamed "Por Suk" or "Uncle Por", and was credited with over 440 films. He had a star at Avenue of Stars in Hong Kong. Early life Leung was born as Leung Guang Choy in Singapore in 1908. Tang Wing-Cheung (; 20 June 1916 – 20 April 1997), better known by his stage name Sun Ma Sze Tsang (), was a Cantonese opera singer and actor in Hong Kong. Career Born in Shunde, Guangdong, China, his parents divorced when he was eight. His father, Tang Kei, was a gambling and Cantonese opera addict. Sunbeam Theatre () is a landmark theatre in Hong Kong showcasing Cantonese opera. It is located at 423 King's Road, North Point, near the intersection with Shu Kuk Street. Yam Kim-fai
Yam Kim-fai (, 4 February 1913 (Lunar 29 December 1912 – 29 November 1989), also known as Ren Jianhui was a renowned Cantonese opera actress in China and Hong Kong. Yam was most notable for her unique ability to sing in the lower register. That her opera voice was indistinguishable from a male one allowed her to play either male or female roles, though she usually performed male ones.
