The Newton Community School District is a public school district based in Newton, Iowa, and serves the city of Newton and surrounding areas in Jasper County. Tom Messinger was hired as superintendent is 2020, after previously serving as superintendent in Red Oak. The school's mascot is the Cardinal. Their colors are red and black. Newton, Iowa
Newton is the county seat of, and most populous city in, Jasper County, Iowa, United States. Located east of Des Moines, Newton is in Central Iowa. As of the 2020 Census, the city population was 15,760. It is the home of Iowa Speedway, Maytag Dairy Farms, and the Iowa Sculpture Festival. History Early history Newton was founded in 1846 as Newton City, then shortened to Newton in 1847 and incorporated as a city in 1857. It was named to pair with Jasper County, following a common American naming scheme at the time in honor of Revolutionary War soldiers John Newton and William Jasper. In the late 19th century, Newton's growth was fueled by the development of coal mines in the region. The first significant mine in the area was the Couch mine of the Jasper County Coal and Railway Company, opened in the 1870s. Little Hawkeye Conference
The Little Hawkeye Conference is a high school athletic conference in central Iowa. With Oskaloosa dropping from 4A to 3A for the 2010–11 school year, the conference now has only two 4A schools (Newton & Indianola). The majority of the membership is made up of only 3A schools, the second largest class of schools in Iowa. Although, Norwalk is on the verge of moving up to 4A. Members Grinnell will be joining the WaMaC Conference in 2023. History The conference was formed in 1983 by Norwalk, Clarke, Winterset and Saydel. In 1988, the conference doubles, adding Perry, Carlisle, Johnston and Nevada. In 1991, Perry and Saydel depart for the Raccoon River Conference, and Boone and Pella Christian join the conference.
