The 2008 New York State Legislature primary election took place on September 9, 2008, and the general election was held on November 4, 2008. All 150 members of the New York State Assembly and all 62 seats of the New York State Senate were up for election. Members of the Assembly and the State Senate serve two-year terms. The State Senate was heavily contested, as the Republicans held a one-seat majority going into the election. The New York State Assembly is the lower house of the New York State Legislature, with the New York State Senate being the upper house. There are 150 seats in the Assembly. Assembly members serve two-year terms without term limits. The Assembly convenes at the State Capitol in Albany. Leadership of the Assembly The Speaker of the Assembly presides over the Assembly. The Speaker is elected by the Majority Conference followed by confirmation of the full Assembly through the passage of an Assembly Resolution. Robert D. "Bob" Barra (born February 1, 1960) is a Republican who was elected to serve the 21st district of the New York State Assembly in November 2000. Because of redistricting due to the census, Assemblyman Barra became the Assembly member from the newly formed 14th Assembly district. Barra received a B.A. degree in communication and journalism from Hofstra University in 1982. Charles D. Lavine (born August 14, 1947) is a member of the New York State Assembly, representing the 13th district, which includes portions of the towns of North Hempstead and Oyster Bay in Nassau County. First elected in 2004, Lavine is a Democrat. Early life and education Lavine was born in Marinette, Wisconsin. Joseph S. Saladino (born March 28, 1961) is an American politician. He is the current Supervisor of the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York. Saladino previously served as a member of the New York Assembly. He is a Republican. James Conte
James D. Conte (January 1, 1959 – October 16, 2012) was an American politician from New York. He served as a Republican New York State Assemblyman for the 10th District from 1988 until his death. Personal life Conte was a lifetime resident of Huntington Station. He attended St. Hugh of Lincoln Elementary School and Huntington High School. Conte received a B.A. degree in economics and political science from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1982. He married Debra Ingalls, and they had three children.
