New Sweden is an unincorporated community in New Sweden Township, Nicollet County, Minnesota, United States. The community is located near the junction of State Highways 22 ( MN 22) and 111 ( MN 111). A post office called New Sweden was established in 1884, and remained in operation until 1905. Nicollet County, Minnesota
Nicollet County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 34,454. Its county seat is St. Peter. Nicollet County is part of the Mankato– North Mankato, MN Metropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1849 the Minnesota Territory legislature defined the boundaries of nine future counties. One of those, Dakota, contained the area north of the Minnesota River where it altered its flow from southeast to northeast. In 1853 the first settler had homesteaded an area on the northeast run of the river, and the following year the settlement of Saint Peter was platted there. Seeing the inflow of settlers into the areas adjoining the river, on March 5, 1853, the territorial legislature partitioned off the lower portion of Dakota County to form a separate entity. New Sweden Township is a township in Nicollet County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 326 at the 2000 census. New Sweden Township was organized in 1864, and named for the native country of many of its early settlers. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.0 square miles (93.1 km), of which 35.8 square miles (92.7 km) is land and 0.2 square mile (0.4 km) (0.47%) is water. Area code 507 is the telephone numbering plan code for the southern fifth of Minnesota, including cities such as Rochester, Mankato, Worthington, Fairmont, Albert Lea, Northfield, and Austin. It was the third area code created for use in the state in 1954, following the original 218 and 612. It was created from the southwestern portion of 218 and the southern portion of 612.
