New Sudbury Centre
The New Sudbury Centre is a shopping mall located in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. It has 110 stores and of retail space. History Built and opened in the 1950s, the entrances to the stores in the New Sudbury Shopping Centre, was originally in a strip mall format with Woolworth and Loblaws at opposite ends, accomplished by walking on the outer perimeter of the mall. "Rue La Ronde," was the first enclosed shopping facility located in the mall which featured both a fountain and resting area. The mall has undergone many renovations since its original design. The food court area used to contain a Loblaws grocery store while a bowling alley was situated in the area of The Source. There used to be a Cochrane's hardware store in the same area. After the bowling alley closed, Little Joe's pinball arcade opened up across from the bowling alley and became a popular entertainment establishment for the youth during the 1970s and 80s. Shoppers Drug Mart Inc. (named Pharmaprix in Quebec) is a Canadian retail pharmacy chain based in Toronto, Ontario. It has more than 1,300 stores in nine provinces and two territories. Future Shop was a Canadian electronics store chain. It was established in 1982 by Hassan Khosrowshahi. By 1990, the chain had become the country's largest retailer of computer and consumer electronics. In January 2013, the company operated 139 locations across Canada. In November 2001, Future Shop was acquired by the similar American chain Best Buy for C$580 million. Woolco was an American-based discount retail chain. It was founded in 1962 in Columbus, Ohio, by the F. W. Woolworth Company. It was a full-line discount department store unlike the five-and-dime Woolworth stores which operated at the time. At its peak, Woolco had hundreds of stores in the US, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. While the American stores were closed in 1983, the chain remained active in Canada until it was sold in 1994 to rival Walmart, which was looking to enter the Canadian market. Sport Chek is the largest Canadian retailer of sporting clothing and sports equipment, with 191 stores throughout Canada as of 2020.
