New Scotland Records
Fang Recordings (previously New Scotland Records) is a record label founded by Canadian Folk Artist Joel Plaskett in 2008 based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Plaskett claims that he "started New Scotland Records to release songs recorded with friends from my musical community in Nova Scotia and abroad". They have released multiple albums on vinyl and CD and digitally for free on theiBandcamp page Studio In addition the record label, Joel opened New Scotland Yard Studio in 2013. It features a 950 square foot room and is equipped to record artists in both digital and analog formats. Speaking on the analog format, Plaskett said "I am useless with a computer. Joel Plaskett
William Joel MacDonald Plaskett (born April 18, 1975) is a Canadian rock musician and songwriter based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was a member of Halifax alternative rock band Thrush Hermit in the 1990s. Plaskett performs in a number of genres, from blues and folk to hard rock, country, and pop. Plaskett's songwriting frequently contains allusions to his home city, Halifax. With his band The Emergency, he has toured throughout North America and Europe with The Tragically Hip, Sloan, Bill Plaskett (his father), and Kathleen Edwards. Big Sugar (band)
Big Sugar is a band formed in Toronto in 1988 by Gordie Johnson, the band's lead singer, lead guitarist and main songwriter. Between 1996 and 2016, Big Sugar was among the top 80 best-selling Canadian artists in Canada and among the top 25 best-selling Canadian bands in Canada. History Big Sugar originally consisted of Johnson, bassist Terry Wilkins, and drummer Al Cross, though the three musicians had already played together for several years as a supporting band for Molly Johnson's jazz performances, and as an informal jam band with members of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir. Dave Marsh (born March 1, 1950) is an American music critic, and radio talk show host. He was an early editor of ''Creem'' magazine, has written for various publications such as ''Newsday'', ''The Village Voice'', and ''Rolling Stone (magazine), Rolling Stone'', and has published numerous books about music and musicians, mostly focused on rock music. Steve Poltz (born February 19, 1960) is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is a founding member of the indie-rock band The Rugburns and collaborated on several songs with singer Jewel, including the 1996 single " You Were Meant for Me", which reached number 2 in the US. Thrush Hermit
Thrush Hermit was a Canadian alternative rock band active in the 1990s, known for their "highly energetic, humorous, and unpredictable performances," as quoted by Vice News. History Thrush Hermit was formed in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1992 by Joel Plaskett (vocals, guitar), Rob Benvie (vocals, guitar), Ian McGettigan (vocals, bass), and Michael Catano (drums). Catano was replaced by Cliff Gibb in 1994; Gibb in turn left the band in 1999 and was replaced by Benn Ross. They signed with Murderecords in 1994 in time to release their ''Smart Bomb'' EP, which featured Benvie's song "French Inhale" and Plaskett's "Hated It". Peter Elkas
Peter Elkas (born July 24, 1976) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, signed to MapleMusic Recordings. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Elkas spent twelve years as part of the Montreal band Local Rabbits, with whom he started playing as a teenager. He released his first solo album, ''Party of One'', in 2004, and has opened for such artists as Ron Sexsmith, Joel Plaskett, Feist and k-os. Al Tuck (born December 23, 1966), is a Canadian songwriter and folksinger from Prince Edward Island who has spent much of his career based in Halifax Regional Municipality, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Early life Tuck was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Summerside, Prince Edward Island, the son of editorial cartoonist and Anglican cleric Canon Robert Tuck. Mo Kenney
Mo Kenney (born 1990) is a Canadian singer/songwriter based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Catching the ear of noted Canadian rocker Joel Plaskett while still in school, Kenney released their first album in 2012, which Plaskett produced. Kenney is known for their lyrical prowess and engaging stage presence. Called "Nova Scotia's rising star" by ''The Scene'' magazine, they have toured with Plaskett as well as with Ron Sexsmith. In 2013, their song "Sucker" won the prestigious SOCAN Songwriting Prize. Background Kenney began playing guitar when they were 11. Old Man Luedecke
Old Man Luedecke is the recording name of two-time Juno Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and banjo player Chris Luedecke of Chester, Nova Scotia. He is most noted as a two-time Juno Award winner for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year – Solo, winning at the Juno Awards of 2009 for ''Proof of Love'' and at the Juno Awards of 2011 for ''My Hands are on Fire and Other Love Songs''.
