New Jersey Route 164
Dowd Avenue is a major thoroughfare in Elizabeth, New Jersey which serves the residential district. The street is long, beginning at an intersection with Trumbull Street in Elizabeth, continuing on a west–east alignment to the intersection with North Avenue at New Jersey Route 81. The street was formerly known as Humboldt Avenue by the city of Elizabeth and formerly maintained by the New Jersey State Highway Department (now the New Jersey Department of Transportation) as an alignment of Route 164. Route 164 was first assigned onto Humboldt Avenue after the 1953 state highway renumbering, continuing until somewhere between 1957 and 1969, when it was decommissioned and turned over to the city for maintenance. Later on, Humboldt Avenue was changed names to Dowd Avenue, and the alignment was used as a frontage road to the recently constructed Route 81 Expressway. New Jersey Route 81
Route 81 is a state highway in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The route is a freeway connector between exit 13A of the New Jersey Turnpike (Interstate 95) and U.S. Route 1/9 near Newark Liberty International Airport. It runs for 1.18 miles (1.90 km), entirely within the city of Elizabeth in Union County. A freeway called Route S100 was initially proposed on the current alignment of Route 81 in 1938; it, along with its parent Route 100, was never built. The current route was conceived in the 1960s as a freeway replacement for Route 164, which followed Humboldt Avenue, a surface road. It was to be designated Route 76, but was renumbered to Route 81 when Interstate 76 was created in New Jersey. 1953 Renumbering (New Jersey)
On January 1, 1953, the New Jersey Highway Department renumbered many of the State Routes. This renumbering was first proposed in 1951 in order to reduce confusion to motorists. A few rules were followed in deciding what to renumber: *No state route and U.S. Route could have the same number; this eliminated 1 (which was also eliminated by other criteria), 22, 30, 40 and 46. While Route 1 was broken into several pieces, the other four were renumbered as Routes 59, 69, 70 and 77, respectively.
