New Independence Township is a township in St. Louis County, Minnesota, Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 299 at the 2010 census. U.S. Highway 53 and State Highway 33 (Minnesota State Highway 33, MN 33) are two of the main routes in the township. Other routes include Saint Louis County Highway 47 (Swan Lake Road). The unincorporated communities of Culver, Minnesota, Culver and Independence, St. Louis County, Minnesota, Independence are located within New Independence Township. Independence is located 22 miles northwest of the city of Duluth, Minnesota, Duluth; and 17 miles north of the city of Cloquet, Minnesota, Cloquet. South Ridge School is located within the southwest corner of the township. History New Independence Township was named in commemoration of the independence of Norway from Sweden in 1905. The Cloquet River is a , accessed May 7, 2012 river in Minnesota, United States. It is the main tributary of the Saint Louis River. Name Cloquet ( ) River is known in the Ojibwe language as the ''Gaa-biitootigweyaag-ziibi'' ("River that parallels the Saint Louis River"). On the map of Stephen H. Long's expedition in 1823, it shows that stream as "Rapid River", and it is unnamed on the map by David Thompson in 1826 for the proposed routes of the international boundary. Cloquet Valley State Forest
The Cloquet Valley State Forest encompasses ; of which (or 15%) are Minnesota Department of Natural Resources forestry administered lands. Located in southeast Saint Louis County, the Cloquet Valley State Forest is located about north of Duluth and southeast of Virginia, in Minnesota's Arrowhead region.
