The Cloquet River is a , accessed May 7, 2012 river in Minnesota, United States. It is the main tributary of the Saint Louis River. Name Cloquet ( ) River is known in the Ojibwe language as the ''Gaa-biitootigweyaag-ziibi'' ("River that parallels the Saint Louis River"). On the map of Stephen H. Long's expedition in 1823, it shows that stream as "Rapid River", and it is unnamed on the map by David Thompson in 1826 for the proposed routes of the international boundary. Carlton County is a county in the State of Minnesota, formed in 1857. As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,207. Its county seat is Carlton. Part of the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation lies in northeastern Carlton County. Carlton County is part of the Duluth, MN- WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. David Thompson (30 April 1770 – 10 February 1857) was a English Canadian, British-Canadian fur trader, surveying, surveyor, and Cartography, cartographer, known to some native people as "Koo-Koo-Sint" or "the Stargazer". Over Thompson's career, he travelled across North America, mapping of North America along the way. For this historic feat, Thompson has been described as the "greatest practical land geographer that the world has produced".
