New Art Exchange
New Art Exchange is a contemporary art gallery in Nottingham's Hyson Green neighborhood representing contexts of Black, Asian, and minority ethnic artists and communities. The organisation formed as a charity in 2003 from APNA Arts (a South Asian arts groups) created by Parbinder Singh and EMACA (East Midlands African Caribbean Arts), which educationalist and historian Len Garrison helped to establish. Architecture The building was designed by architects Hawkins\Brown. It opened in 2008, replacing the old Art Exchange building that was previously known as The People’s Dispensary. It was officially opened by Laura Dyer from Arts Council England, Michael Williams from Nottingham City Council, and artist Hew Locke on 5 September 2008. Nottingham ( , East Midlands English, locally ) is a city status in the United Kingdom, city and Unitary authorities of England, unitary authority area in Nottinghamshire, East Midlands, England. Len Garrison
Lenford Alphonso (Kwesi) Garrison (13 June 1943 – 18 February 2003) was an educationalist, community activist and historian whose life's work was to catalogue the development of the black British identity and its history and promote the works of young black writers. To this end, he set up ACER (Afro-Caribbean Education Resource) and co-founded the Black Cultural Archives. Family and education Len Garrison was born in St Thomas, Jamaica. His father, Ernest Samuel Garrison — a cabinet maker born in Hopewell, Hanover — and mother, Albertha Adassa Garrison, a school teacher born in Somerset, Saint Andrew Parish, Jamaica, St Andrew, migrated to Britain in 1952 and 1953 respectively, and Len joined them there in west London in 1954 shortly before the birth of the first of his British siblings, sister Janet in May 1954. Arts Council England is an arm's length non-departmental public body of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. It is also a registered charity. Nottingham City Council is the local authority for the unitary authority of Nottingham in Nottinghamshire, England. Hew Locke
Hew Donald Joseph Locke (born 13 October 1959) is a British sculptor and contemporary visual artist based in Brixton, London. In 2000 he won a Paul Hamlyn Award and the EASTinternational Award. In 2010 he was shortlisted for the Fourth plinth, Trafalgar Square, London. In 2015 Prince William, Duke of Cambridge dedicated Locke's public sculpture ''The Jurors'', commissioned to commemorate 800 years since the signing of Magna Carta. Locke has had several solo exhibitions in the UK, for example in 2005 at The New Art Gallery, Walsall and in the USA, and is regularly included in international exhibitions and Biennales.
