Nevada State Route 844
State Route 844 (SR 844) is a state highway in central Nevada, United States. The route follows ''Ione Road'', covering part of the connection between State Route 361 and Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park. SR 844 was formerly known as State Route 91, which extended further northeast to Ione. Route description State Route 844 begins at a junction with Gabbs Valley Road (SR 361) about north of Gabbs. The route heads east from there, passing through a small section of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The state maintained highway ends in Ione Valley east of the national forest boundary. The road continues past the SR 844 terminus to connect to Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park near the town site of Berlin and also provides connections to the town of Ione. Gabbs, Nevada
Gabbs is an unincorporated town in Nye County, Nevada, United States. The population was 269 at the 2010 census and it is the northernmost community of Greater Las Vegas. History Gabbs was founded ''circa'' December 1941 as a company town for Basic Magnesium, Inc. (BMI), which operated a magnesium production plant in the area. The town grew out of an earlier mining camp named Brucite (after the magnesium oxide brucite that occurred locally), and took the name of the surrounding Gabbs Valley, itself named after paleontologist William Gabb (who had studied fossil specimens from the area). World War II demand for magnesium fueled the plant's expansion under the direction of the War Production Board, and policing, a jail, and a school district were established during 1942. Gabbs became a township in June 1943, with a population of 426. Nevada State Route 361
State Route 361 (SR 361), Gabbs Valley Road, is a state highway in Mineral, Nye, and Churchill counties in Nevada, United States. The highway serves the town of Gabbs following Gabbs Valley Road through the extreme northwestern tip of Nye County. Gabbs is isolated from the rest of the county, requiring travel on SR 361 through other counties in order to reach any other major town in Nye County. SR 361 was previously known as State Route 23. Route description State Route 361 in Mineral County at a junction with U.S. Route 95 approximately northwest of Luning. From there, the highway heads north towards the mountains of the Gabbs Valley Range. The route curves sharply east to climb up to Calavada Summit (elevation ), and then turns northward again to pass over Petrified Summit (elevation ) before leaving the mountain range. Ione, Nevada
Ione, Nevada, is a ghost town in Nye County, Nevada, located approximately 23 miles east of Gabbs, Nevada. Ione came into existence in November 1863 after silver was discovered by one Mr. P. A. Havens in the Shoshone Range. While most of the mining in the area (the Union Mining District) was closer to communities such as Union and Grantsville, Ione developed as a trade and milling center. Members of the community were shortly petitioning the territorial government for the formation of a new county and in January 1864 Nye county was organized within the Nevada Territory; Ione was granted a stipend of $800.00 with which to construct the county's first courthouse. Within three years development at Belmont had created enough excitement to lure away a great percentage of Ione's population, and in February 1867 the county seat was removed to that location.
