Nevada State Route 490
State Route 490 (SR 490) is a state highway in White Pine County, Nevada. The route serves a state prison north of Ely. Route description The route begins at the entrance to the Ely State Prison, a maximum-security penitentiary north of Ely. From there, the route follows Lackawanna Road in a southeasterly direction through desert terrain for nearly . SR 490 then cuts through a short mountain gap and turns nearly due south. After another , the route turns easterly at a T-intersection. SR 490 then travels about further to the southeast to reach its terminus at a junction on U.S. Route 93 northeast of Ely and just south of the Ely Airport. Ely State Prison
Ely State Prison (ESP) is a maximum security penitentiary located in unincorporated White Pine County, Nevada, about north of Ely. The facility, operated by the Nevada Department of Corrections, opened in July 1989. the prison has a staff of 406 and is a major employer in the Ely area. As of September 2010, the prison housed 1,077 male inmates. The state's death row for men is located at Ely State Prison, as is the execution chamber, which opened in 2016. History Residents of Ely, Nevada spent a year and $25,000 lobbying for the prison to be built in the area. On December 19, 1985, the prison was unanimously approved by the finance committees of the Nevada Legislature to be built in the Ely area. The prison opened in July 1989. Phase I was completed and opened in August of that year. Phase II was completed November 1990. Originally Ely had a capacity of 1,054; as of 2010 its capacity is for 1,150. Ely (, ) is the largest city and county seat of White Pine County, Nevada, United States. Ely was founded as a stagecoach station along the Pony Express and Central Overland Route. In 1906 copper was discovered. Ely's mining boom came later than the other towns along US 50. The railroads connecting the transcontinental railroad to the mines in Austin, Nevada and Eureka, Nevada have long been removed, but the railroad to Ely is preserved as a heritage railway by the Nevada Northern Railway and known as the ''Ghost Train of Old Ely''. Ely Airport (Yelland Field) is a county-owned airport three miles northeast of Ely, in White Pine County, Nevada, United States. The Federal Aviation Administration says this airport had 239 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2008, 216 in 2009 and 245 in 2010. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 categorized it as a ''general aviation'' airport.
