State Route 221 (SR 221) is a state highway in Elko County, Nevada. The route, concurrent with Interstate 80 Business (I-80 Bus.) follows Chestnut Street in the city of Carlin. The highway was once part of the former route of State Route 1 and former U.S. Route 40 (US 40). Route description State Route 221 begins on SR 278 just south of Interstate 80 (I-80) west of downtown Carlin. From there, the route follows Chestnut Street east towards Carlin. After about , the highway enters populated areas of Carlin, passing through residential areas and small businesses. The businesses and homes taper off after a little more than . Carlin is a small city located near the western border of Elko County in northeast Nevada, west of the city of Elko. It is part of the Elko Micropolitan Statistical Area. A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Other terminology for a concurrency includes overlap, coincidence, duplex (two concurrent routes), triplex (three concurrent routes), multiplex (any number of concurrent routes), dual routing or triple routing. Interstate 80 (I-80) traverses the northern portion of the US state of Nevada.
